Cathars Crusade (Kaa-tharr-s)
Organization of mortals charged with hunting down, exterminating, and defending villages against the monsters of the Ulvenwald. Cathars are not enlisted by force or coercion, they are exclusively volunteers willing to stare down the darkness that haunts Respite. For those who prove themselves willing to brave such dangers, the veterans bestow upon them all their knowledge & skill.
The Crusade is understaffed, underfunded, and yet, undeterred. In a land with so much to fear, the sight of ordinary people willing to fight & die to protect each other is inspiring to many. Almost every volunteer owes their life to a Cathar. Many see them as local heroes, although the Crusade discourages such displays of charity & worship.

Most Cathars work for little or even no pay, and yet, in the villages they defend, they never want for food, drink, or a place to sleep. Taverns and merchants (and quite a few brothels) will straight-up refuse Cathar gold, offering whatever they can to keep them safe, fed, and ready to face the darkness.
