Plant-Based Dyes and Pigments
Glowthorn Blossom
Tiny, glowing blossoms with petals that shimmer like water droplets under moonlight. This plant is found in the region of the Whistling Mountains, specifically in the caves of those mountains.
Harvested at night using silk gloves to avoid damaging the delicate petals. Can be used to add a glow effect to various different types of paints and can also be used in the dye process of linen. As a rare pigment, it generally costs around 3-5 Nova Crowns, depending on where you are in Arotora. Its glow allows artists to create unique works that seem to live and change with their surroundings. Due to its rarity and the intricate process of collecting and preserving the petals, only the wealthiest patrons or highest-ranking guilds have access to the purest pigments.
Ashveil Petals
A plant with thin, ashen petals that disintegrate into a fine powder when exposed to heat. This plant grows in wastelands and swamps alike. The collection process involves magic-imbued items, lest they burst into ash upon contact.The very odd petals are usually harvested carefully and then when its time to make art supplies with it, a binder of aether gum allows it to be formed as pressed ash sticks. Adding sap from lustra tree will give the effect of an ink-like mixture. Can be mixed with charcoal to darken its colour, but artists use it to sketch their paintings as the pigment is easy to get rid of or hide. As an uncommon pigment, it usually costs around 1 Nova Crown.
Sunsilk Sap
An iridescent, opaque sap that drips like golden ichor from the Golden Pine tree. The sap is dried out and then crushe dina mortar and pestle untill it becomes a fine power. This pigment is perfect for giving a golden effect to any painting or art.Adding Lustra Sap to the powder will make a ink-like mixture able to be used for calligraphy and mixed Lunaris Glaze makes a thick bodied paint. Due to the rarity of Golden Pines, this pigment is considered very rare and hard to produce and therefore it is nearly impossible to find for less than 1 Prismatic Crest. Usually sought after by frame makers to gild their creations.
Moonshade Lily
A cluster of small, silky flowers with silvery veins running through them. Can be found near Dawnrest during the summer months.The small flowers must be harvested before sunride due to the face that they wilt in the sunlight. Able to be mixed with Lustra Sap in order to create a cool-toned ink that shifts subtly in the light. Its rarity is attributed to it blooming three nights total per month in the spring and summer months and usually costs around 2 Nova Crowns.
Bloodroot Fern
A large, red fern that grows in the forests surrounding the Whistling Mountains. Collection of this plant usually is by picking the plant itself. However, it is probably best to harvest with thick leather gloves as the plant bleeds a deep red that stains most things it comes in contact with.The process of collecting and refining the dye usually involves boiling the plant in water until it turns a deep, blood red. Drying out the leaves and crushing them into a powder to mix with different art binders is also another method used. This pigment and dye are fairly common and isnt necessarily hard to create from the plant, so it generally costs about 5 Twilight Coins.
Frostpetal Thistle
These thistle flowers often look as if theyre covered in frost, even though they are not. This plant often grows in the northern lands, near the Fence at the Frozen Fen.Frostpetal Thistle often looks prickly and painful but are actually quite soft and able to be picked without worry. This is a pigment that is often used to create winter scenes and light skies. As this plant grows in cold environemnts, it is a rather uncommon pigment to obtain. This pigment usually costs around 1 Nova Crown and even up to 3 Nova Crowns depending on how far south you travel.
Starbloom Seeds
A plant with small, purple and glimmering seeds that resemble tiny stars. Often found along the cliffs that are on the coast, where you can see the sky clearly at night.These seeds have to be picked, dried and ground into a fine dust in a mortar and pestle. When combined with Lunaris Glaze, it makes a thick bodied paint that is able to be used for things like night sky painting. Creates the effect of glimmering stars. This is a fairly common pigment as the flower and seeds itself are able to be found commonly amongst the coast. It usually costs anywhere from 5 Twilight Coins to 1 Nova Crest.
Emberleaf Moss
This luminescent amber coloured moss that glows with faint heat. Grows in warmer climates, and has to be scraped off of where it grows carefully, as it can give first degree burns.It is then dried and made into a powder, then mixed with various binders in order to make inks, paint, and watercolour. Mixing this the paints or inks made from this moss will result in the mixture giving a soothing warmth to the picture. Perfect for paintings of sunsets or of embers. This pigment usually costs around 6-7 Twilight Coins as its fairly common to find.
Nightvine Pods
A fairly fast growing vine-like plants that bears small black pods that are used to create the most common form of ink in the world: Nightvine Ink.These pods are harvested and soaked in cold water and gently have the inky, viscous substance inside extracted. Various medium bases are mixed in order to create a black colour that is used for many different things. This is the most common type of pigment in allof Arotora and costs 1 Twilight Coin.
Auroraflame Orchids
Auroraflames are stunningly beautiful orchids that shift in various pink hues constantly. The pigments made from this plant creates one of the richest pink hues known to the continent.Found growing near the Fence at the Frozen Fen and seems to be an extremely rare occurence that it is harvested. It is used for many floral paintings, due to its ability to create many shades of pink. The process is simply to take the petals and mash them into a fine paste. As this pigment is exremely rare, it costs around 2 Prismatic Crest.
Mineral-Based Dyes and Pigments
Ethereal SIlver
This ore is the epitome of starlight. This ore is only found inside meteors that fall into the atmosphere and leave a chunk of themselves in.Generally the use case of this pigment is to mix it into something you'd like to be glittery and sparkly. Often used for its silvery effect and its sparkle. Creates a beautiful effect for painting stars and adding to any other colour to make it shimmer. Due to its rarity, it generally costs 1 Ethereal Coin for a small amount.
Infernum Crystal
A red-orange crystal able to be found in some mines and outdoor deposits throughout the Whistling Mountains. Many artist seek these crystals out in order to make a translucent pigment that is good for painting fiery effects.In order to obtain the crystals, they mus be cooled completely before extraction. They are a fragile crystal and therefor able to be crushed into a fine pigment dust. This pigment generally costs around 5 Nova Crowns, and 1 Prismatic Crest for raw crystals to be bought.
Skyglass Shard
This small and glass-like shard is often found floating above the forest floor in the Whispering Woods. The colour seems as though it is meant to be very tansluscent when mixed with mediums to make paints, and is used for glazing paintings of the water.Able to be plucked from the air and carried easily. Extraction process is just grinding it into a fine, dust like powder that has a beautiful cyan hue. Mixing this dust with Lustra Sap and it is able to be used as a tinted glaze that can be applied to a painting of water. Fairly common as they are essentially crystalized rain.
Umbra Stone
A small black rock with purple opalescent hues shining from within. Usually found along the coast to the west.Much like Skyglass Shards, Umbra Stones are a glass-like material that is able to be ground into a fine powder and able to make a transluscent glaze-like substance. Used in shadowy paintings for a quick adjustment of lighting and shadow. It is a rather uncommon mineral and so the pigment itself usually costs around 5 Twilight Coins.
Solarite Gem
This radiant gemstone is usually found in the rock dpeosits of the Glittering Wastes, to the south west. Easily collectable and found in the wastes.It is something that many gem hunters seek out in the Glittering Wastes Ideally, the use case for this pigment is using it to paint sunrises and sunsets, as it gives off a faint glow and makes the sun pop in any painting. It is a rather rare mineral and usually costs somewhere around 4 Nova Crowns.
Other Dye and Pigment Materials
Pheonix Ash
A scarlet coloured ash that is able to be mixed with various binders in order to create inks, paint, watercolours, and many more. Pheonix nests are an extremely rare occurence, even then obtaining the ash is equally more difficult.Provides a warm colour to any painting. Due to its rarity it usually costs quite a large sum of 1 Ethereal Core. This pigment is one of the rarest pigments known on Arotora. There is a limit on the amount of pigment able to be sold to one person.
Evershade Ink
A thick, viscous ink thought to come from squids of monstrous proportions. Found in the water off the east coast.This ink is captured in the water without harming the squids and is extremely rare to come across. This ink is often used as the ink that the royal families in Arotora uses for official letters and summons. Due to it only being used by rolaty, the ink costs around 10 Ethereal Cores.
Verdanite Gemstone
Verdanite is a radiant emerald-green gemstone flecked with intricate, swirling inclusions of silver and dark green. Verdanite is found within the Whistling Mountains, often within caves.This gemstone is crushed into dust and mixed with different binders to form art supplies from. The powdered pigment is reserved for the most prestigious artists and magical artisans and often costs around 1 Ethereal Core. When activated with a light spell, the inclusions create a dynamic shimmer, making the artwork appear as though it's alive and moving.
These are just the ones that are an uncommon color and often used by Royal Artists or professional ones. Keep in mind there may be more out there, and they will be a different entry entirely.
