Chapter 2, Session 11: The Dreamwoven Tide

General Summary

The party continues the fight!
Peregrine used twinned spell to cast Rays of Frost as she also healed Mallus Somnium and tried to encourage Auriel's Trauma Hound to attack as soon as possible. Shockingly, Bree Applebottom  missed her shots as The Bright Concord soldiers attempted to hit Sigholdt Sofiasson - failing as Malus used his summoned tentacles to protect him and Peregrine forced a Silvery Barb on the soldier. One soldier began to run, dropping the last chain as he dodged Esmerae's Eldritch Blasts. In a shocking turn of events, the Trauma Hound turned on the party and latched on to Sigholdt, taking the form of a woman from his past saying “Where were you?” Her appearance caused the party to make saves against overwhelming feelings of guilt, saves that Sigholdt and Bree failed, causing them to become restrained. The Trauma Hound bit into Sigholdt just as Hermione got her second Nat 20 in a row (first the save, now the attack), and literally melted a soldier with her Chromatic Orb. As Sigholdt failed to hit the Trauma Hound, he was able to break free of the mental restraints. Peregrine discovered the hound was immune to fire as her Burning Hands failed to distract it, so instead she healed Sigholdt moments before becoming paralysed by fear of the fire. Sensing easier prey, the Trauma Hound turned to target Peregrine.     Malus dispatched the last soldier as Bree shot at the Trauma Hound, though she remained restrained. Esmerae flanked with Sigholdt to stab at the Trauma Hound using ‘evil marking’. With a critical hit and an eldritch smite, the Trauma Hound was badly hurt, but still up. It nearly killed Peregrine with a bite, but Sigholdt’s magical cloak saved her from an instant death. In retaliation, the Trauma Hound let out a blast of fire to knock Peregrine unconscious instead. At that moment, Sigholdt realised the hound would attack an unconscious body as it saw easy prey. Emboldened by her recent successes in combat, Hermione stepped forward and crit AGAIN! Using cold damage, she killed the Trauma Hound, making it explode into snow. Malus rushed forward but failed to stabilise Peregrine, so Sigholdt stepped in to heal her. The party took some time to loot the bodies, including putting the branded weapons and armour into their bags of holding, before dumping the bodies over the side of the cliff. Sigholdt also got Hermione to identify the magical chains and collar used on the Trauma Hound, learning that with a 30-minute ritual, they would grant limited control over a Quori, Nocta Mori or Trauma Hound.   After the last little bit of travelling, the party finally reached the walls of Sanctuary. They approached, the surrounding area crowded with tents of people waiting to get inside. After taking a moment to tidy up with Esmerae’s prestidigitation, and Peregrine making herself a little sluttier (with some make-up help from Esmerae), Peregrine was ready to take the lead to use her contact in Sanctuary to get them past the walls. However, Peregrine and Hermione failed to notice a fast-moving shadow flying over the walls. As the others looked up, they saw a massive bat-like creature cackling as it flew (a creature known as a Dream-Eater ), with strange ash falling every time it flapped its wings. After completing a circle, the creature flew off, suddenly chased by an ancient emerald dragon with a Bugbear rider, apparently a member of ]The Drake Wardens  that emerged from the city. Before the party could remain distracted by the bat, however, they realised the ash was starting to take on strange forms of monsters, moving closer to the wall. Odd spore-like shapes were forming, and the party learned they were neither Quori nor Nocta Mori, and would not respond in the same way to certain damage types. As some spores were absorbed, they took on more monstrous, deadly forms, approaching the walls and attacking the panicking people. Sigholdt recognised these creatures symbolised the death of the people of The Waking , and after asking Crumble, learned that Crumble had no idea what the strange ash-creatures were. After taking a shot with Eldritch Blast, and a shot from Bree, one of the spores died, exploding as it did so. As one of the larger creatures started to turn its attention on the party, Malus charged forward to hit it, feeling himself drained slightly when he was near it. Hermione missed a Chromatic Orb, and when Peregrine tried to cast Slow, the creature countered her spell with a strange ability that let it teleport directly next to Peregrine, causing her to Misty Step quickly away. Malus realised in that moment he was surrounded by the spore-creatures, which all latched on to him and began to drain his health, as Bree was also latched onto. @   Esmerae sent an Eldritch Blast at the large creature and hid behind a commoner as it threw a hand axe in her direction and teleported to the axe. Unfortunately, it was still able to hit Esmerae hard. Sigholdt started to snipe the spores latched onto Malus as Bree dispatched the one on her before helping Sigholdt and Malus. Hermione took a moment to kill a spore on Malus before rushing toward the door as the guards realised it was better to try and get the people in before they were killed off by the monsters. Peregrine messaged Esmerae to find out where she needed to stand on the other side of the wall for Esmerae to use her as a teleport anchor, before running for the door as well. On her way, she cast Spiritual Weapon, taking a crack at the big monster. As Malus was being slowly drained by the spore-leeches, Esmerae used her vampiric charm on a commoner to move him into position against the wall to set up her teleport route. As the large monster missed Esmerae, it threw a handaxe at Bree and also missed, keeping him in place and remaining a threat to Esmerae’s escape route. Sigholdt managed to reach Malus to Lay on Hands and heal him, before trying to mark the large monster who countered his magic with another axe throw - however Sigholdt used Shield to counter the counter and prevent another teleportation.   As Bree killed more spores on Malus, she ran for the stairs to reach the top of the wall for a better vantage point. Suddenly more of the spore-leeches appeared just as Malus killed the last one on him, giving him a chance to hide behind a commoner for cover. Hermione cast Crushing Singularity to try and clear a path to the gate, proceeding to kill a swarm of the spore-leeches. Peregrine took out a spore-leech with her Spiritual Weapon as she waited in position. It only took a moment more for Esmerae to run, blood-jumping through her charmed commoner and emerging out of Peregrine on the other side of the wall, safely crossing. In retaliation, the monster (a creature known as The Dreamwoven Adjudicator ) killed the commoner and teleported to Sigholdt, killing a commoner by him as well. Sigholdt failed to hit the Adjudicator as Bree tried to Hunter’s Mark it - only to be countered and for the Adjudicator to teleport to the top of the wall next to her. The riflemen who were shooting from the top began to freak out, turning to target the monster. Hermione ran up the stairs to try and help, accidentally knocking out a guard instead. Peregrine cast Misty Step to get herself up onto the wall a safe distance from the group, before casting a twinned Guiding Bolt, killing one of the spore-leeches (Parasitic Slithers) but missing the Adjudicator. Seeing where all the action was, Esmerae used Spider Climb to get up the wall and stab the Adjudicator three times. In response, the Adjudicator stepped back off the wall, taking attacks of opportunity against it, before exploding in a burst of light and fire, killing the guards and knocking Hermione out. Luckily, Peregrine was able to resist the fear paralysis from the fire.   After landing on the ground, the Adjudicator proceeded to get carved into by Sigholdt, although it was now blocking the gates to get past the walls for Malus and Sigholdt. Bree took a shot at it, as Malus ran to join Sigholdt after dispatching more of the spore-leeches. Hermione managed to bring herself around to consciousness, taking a potion to heal before stepping off the wall and casting Feather Fall for a safe descent. Peregrine attacked with her Spiritual Weapon and tried to hit one of the spore-leeches with a spell - however, the Adjudicator decided to target her, knocking her unconscious and teleporting back to the top of the wall. Esmerae took a moment to heal herself, then stabbed the monster and darted away, getting hit on her exit. After a successful hit on Bree, the Adjudicator teleported to Sigholdt by countering his Eldritch Blast. Bree cleverly cast Cure Wounds to bring Peregrine up in time for Peregrine to cast a magical Darkness on the Adjudicator, just as Malus accidentally knocked Sigholdt out with a Nat 1 attack. Peregrine used the darkness to heal Sigholdt without being countered. Esmerae rushed through the gate to drag Sigholdt through to safety.   As the Adjudicator stepped out of the darkness, he failed to knock Malus down. Sigholdt cast his Vow of Emnity on the Adjudicator and hit with a smite for big damage, but it was Bree’s final shot that got the kill on the monster. After the rest of the party finished killing the last of the spore-leeches, they were finally all able to step through the gates into the promised safety of Sanctuary.
