The Contest

Also known as: The Rite of Balance

When no guild holds favor in the Kingdom of Najarune, the Sacred Pentarch calls forth The Contest, a ceremonial struggle that determines which of the great guilds will assume the role of steward over the kingdom’s affairs. Though the crown remains the highest power, the winning guild influences policy, governance, and kingdom-wide initiatives until the next Contest is declared.

The Contest unfolds through a series of challenges designed to test each guild’s resourcefulness, leadership, and alignment with the values of the realm. These may include acts of diplomacy, community service, strategy, or artistic and martial trials. Adventurers from across the kingdom volunteer to represent their chosen guilds, taking on quests and missions that impact the Contest’s outcome.

While the guilds are in competition, fatal conflict is strongly discouraged. The trials are designed to push boundaries, not cross them. The Contest is a public affair, celebrated in towns and watched closely by both nobility and commonfolk, and it serves as both a proving ground and a unifying tradition.t

The current Contest is set in The Borderlands, where the guilds must navigate not only one another but also the presence of theVorik'Hel , an ancient and territorial people. Their homeland is now the center stage for guild operations, complicating the balance between diplomacy, ambition, and spiritual consequence. Tensions run high as the sacred land they guard begins to stir with forgotten power.

Though the Contest claims to uphold unity and virtue, it is also a political theater, a place where sabotage, alliance, and manipulation may brew beneath noble declarations. Yet even in its complexity, the Contest remains a cornerstone of Najarune’s tradition, a mechanism through which the kingdom renews its vision and hands power to those who prove they can wield it.
