Ippei has lived in Panchu Mura all his life. He came to the temple as an adult, shortly after his betrothal to his childhood sweetheart fell apart. A steady, but unexceptional, monk, he now finds himself the abbot of the temple because there are no other monks. Until last year, there were 4 other monks, but the previous abbot died of old age last summer and during the winter, 2 monks died of fever and the last was killed by drunk peasants who took issue with his sermonizing on their laziness and neglect of Kenro-ji-jin.
