Vallum

Vallum is a region in northern Mirran. It was once a prosperous kingdom that fell when Syn Evokiyad erupted at the beginning of the Second Dawn. The region was inhospitable for centuries afterward, and its ruins are buried beneath the snow. Vallum remains uninhabited even in the Third Dawn, as ghost stories surround the land. Those who venture there often don't return.

Geography

Vallum is a snowcapped region, and sees feet of snowfall even in the summer. Its northernmost reaches are covered in permafrost. It is fairly mountainous in its southern region, which makes travel treacherous. These mountains give way to a relatively flat expanse of snow and ice, underneath which are several ice caves. Syn Evokiyad is located in this area, and can be seen for miles as it is the only mountain in the area.

Localized Phenomena

Vallum is the subject of many horror stories and folktales throughout Naikwan. Those who have journeyed there and returned claim that ghouls roam free in the land's ice caves, or that the land is haunted somehow. It is unknown what the basis of these rumors are, but scholars believe that they have at least some truth to them.

History

Vallum was once the location of a kingdom where Huma and Valo lived together, and for the most part, amicably. It was one of the first instances of a mixed population in history, a fact that it was mocked and reviled for across the world, particularly in the nation of Serus to the south. This peace lasted for centuries until Syn Evokiyad erupted at the start of the Second Dawn and the kingdom was completely destroyed. All of its citizens were killed, either through the initial blast or in the ensuing natural disasters it caused. This plunged the region, which was already cold, into a volcanic winter that still rages as of the Third Dawn. The eruption also affected many other countries, and even caused the collapse of the Tallis Empire. The people of Serus took this as a sign that their god, Ondan, disapproved of Huma and Valo intermixing. This belief is what would later lead to the creation of the Mirran Dominion and their quest to subjugate the Valo and eradicate the Aurai.
