Zagreus

Grc: Ζαγρεύς

The daimon of resurrection is a secretive figure whose worship is confined to mystery cults, and whose stories are spoken in hushed voices if at all.   In the old tradition of the bards, Zagreus was a prince of the Underworld, son of Haides and Persephone, until he was ripped into pieces during the Titanomachy. His heart was salvaged by Athene, placed in a jar, and presented to Zeus for safekeeping. The heart was later transplanted into the womb of Semele, a Theban maiden who gave birth to Dionysos. This is the mysterious in-the-know reason why Dionysos is called "the twice-born daimon." The cover story for the masses is that Zeus immolated Semele and sewed the indestructable fetus into his theigh until it came to term.

A three-day Thesmophoria festival specific to the Town of Pontiai is celebrated in the summer month of Bukatios in the grove of Cabeirian Demeter and the Maid, grounds that are also dedicated to wine daimones called the Cabeiri. The elder Cabeiri is named Cabir, while the younger is called Pais, although the initiated know that these two are Dionysos and Zagreus, and thus aspects of the same entity.   The inhabitants of Naupactus once attempted similar rituals, and met with divine vengeance for doing the wrong thing in the wrong place.
