Oidipous

Grc: Οἰδίπους - En: Oedipus - "With a Swollen Foot"

Oidipous was a prince of Korinth, the son of King Polybus and Queen Merope, who left home to avoid an oracle's dire prediction that he would kill his father and marry his mother. After an unfortunate encounter with a violent old man at a crossroad, Oidipous arrived in Thebai at a time when the Sphinx was plaguing the land. The king had been killed while on the road to seek aid, and beautiful Queen Jokasta was offering her hand to any man clever enough to rid the land of its monster. Only Oidipous proved clever enough to solve the riddle of the Sphinx and, as the kingdom's beloved savior, married the queen and assumed the throne. The royal couple have four children, including twin boys and two younger girls.

Oidipous in Oedipus Rex

Seeking to rid Thebai of another plague of polution, Oidipous consults a seer and learns that he must solve the murder of Laius, the prior king. In doing so, he discovers that he himself killed the old king on the road, not knowing who he was. And that Laius was also his father. And that Jokasta is his mother.   Oidipous blinds himself and goes into exile.
