They have known one another for as long as they can remember. Lady Masako Adachi would bring all her children to Omi in the summers and the children would play in the water while she and Lady Sakai traded stories over tea. The engagement was formalized several years ago, prior to Lady Sakai's death.
Nicknames & Petnames
They started out very respectful and formal, especially in public. Privately they are on a first name basis, with Jin going so far as shortening her name to simply "Chiyo".
Relationship Reasoning
Clan Adachi has always been a firm supporter of Shimura. Unfortunately, all of Lord Shimura's biological sons passed, either in combat or by some cruel curse. His sister's son, Jin Sakai, is his last remaining relative.

History
The party saved her from a brothel in Sasuura on the initial day of the invasion. Lord Sakai challenged the brute who had raped her. Together they killed him, resulting in Sakura's awakening.
Relationship Reasoning
In Sakura's mind, she is stronger and safer when Lord Sakai is near. It has certainly been a strange coincidence so far, as she has been finishing his targets and hiding behind him after making a strike.
Head and last surviving member of Clan Sakai. The nephew of Lord Shimura (jito of Tsushima), he has become the de facto jito with his uncle captured by the Mongols. The Party saved him from what should have been fatal wounds at Komoda Beach, and now act as his most trusted allies and advisors in the battle to free Tsushima. Their goal is to stop the invasion here, so that it never reaches greater Japan.
