Kinaka'pua - Flower People

Who Are They?

Kinaka'pua, also known as flower people, are a species of sapient flowers that primarily occupy the grasslands of Myrtha. These friendly individuals are fiercely dedicated to preserving their natural surroundings, which they regard as the sacred realm of their beloved goddess, Mohala'Ma. Hence, they hold a deep, long-lasting disdain for any people or actions that disrespect or harm this cherished environment.   They nurture a profound and enchanting bond with the diverse flora and fauna surrounding them, safeguarding the equilibrium of their ecosystem.

Anatomy

Puas exhibit an anatomical structure strikingly similar to that of typical flowers. They feature a robust stalk that serves as the body (for some, the head is a part of the stalk), with hands and feet made of leaves or vines. In certain varieties, the head is comprised of two distinct components: the sepal, which forms the protective outer layer often resembling green leaves that encase a developing bud, and the petals, the eye-catching and colourful elements that enhance the flower's allure.   Nestled within the petals are the puas' reproductive organs: the stamen, representing the male component, and the pistil, the female counterpart. The stamen, the site of pollen production, typically consists of a delicate filament that supports the anther, where pollen is created. The pistil plays a crucial role as the nourishing part of the flower. It consists of three essential components: the stigma, which facilitates pollen germination; the style, a slender tube that directs the pollen to its place of nurture; and the ovary, which nurtures the development of the bud.

Sensory Capabilities

Kinaka'puas explore their surroundings and communicate through the five senses—sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Additionally, they utilize a remarkable sensory ability: pheromones. Each pua possesses a distinctive "pheromone identity," providing a trustworthy method of recognition.   Puas can also convey emotions and intentions through the intensity and smell of the chemicals they release. For example, a strong, sweet fragrance might signify happiness, a subtle, salty aroma can suggest nervousness, and a tingling, bitter scent may indicate jealousy.

Fun fact
Puas can voluntary emit specific pheromones with the intent to deceive, but the scent would be a bit off. This oddness can be detected if one is vigilant.

Reproduction Process

Pollination is a vital process that involves the generation of pollen in the stamen, followed by its transfer to the pistil and entry into the ovary, leading to the formation of a bud. This intricate process unfolds in two primary stages:

  1. Pollination: Pollen is produced in the anther and subsequently transferred to the stigma. During this stage, the petals are closed.
  2. Germination: The pollen then journeys down the style into the ovary, where it is fed and warmed by its carrier. This stage lasts approximately three months, culminating in the blooming of the petals to unveil a new bud.
These sapient flowers reproduce in one of two ways: self-pollination (asexual reproduction) or cross-pollination (sexual reproduction). In self-pollination, the flowers have to create their own pollen, ensuring a consistent genetic makeup but is lacking in genetic diversity. Meanwhile, cross-pollination allows for greater genetic diversity, as pollen from one flower can grow in the ovaries of another, leading to unique offspring.   In kinaka'pua society, self-pollination is promoted only as a final option when faced with isolation. This approach ensures that the species remains adaptable and resilient in the face of environmental changes.

Diet

The kinaka'pua are herbivorous creatures, their diet primarily consisting of leaves and grass. They also consume soil rich in nutrients and minerals. An additional source of food for the puas is, quite fittingly, sunlight.   Through a process referred to as photosynthesis, puas absorb Malama's rays to convert into energy and nourishment. This unique adaptation allows them to thrive in their native habitat, relying less on external food sources.
