Frouron Protateship

By Konrad Bennett Hughes
The Frouron Protates are called the "Guardians of Truth”. They are a Holy Order of bodyguard priests recruited from non-noble, tribal peoples inhabiting the fringes of the Ten Kingdoms. After going through years of rigorous training, a Frouron Protate is assigned to government officials, noble families, ambassadors, and generals to guard for the rest of their lives. Expected to lay down their own life o save that of their charge, if they outlive them in combat, Frouron Protates are often severely punished.
From hulking bestial warriors from the Wildlands of Barbania to agile, lithe blademasters of the Worldspine Mountains, Frouron Protates come in many shaped and sizes. However, the customary heavy armor and long-bladed weapons of the holy order are typical, as they provide the best opportunity to protect their charges.
All Frouron Protate recruits are given over to D’Kaiosyni the Goddess of Justice, before the age of ten. Taken to the city-isle of Isustad where the holy order's headquarters has stood for more than a thousand years, each recruit is judged for worthiness by the Matia, the Eyes of the Gods. If they pass the Judgement, they are entered into the intense training curriculum which lasts from 8 to 10 years.
At the end of their training, each potential Frouron Protate is assigned an apprenticeship to a governmental position on Isulstad for two years. They might be assigned to local law enforcement branches such as the City Watch or the Investigations Magical Occurences Bureau (IMOB), where they will learn how to conduct investigations and hunt down perpetrators. Or they might be assigned to the Harbourmaster's Guild to keep watch on more mercantile matters or to the Consilium of Isulstad to guard the very halls that the Kings and Lords decide the most important political matters. Wherever a Frouron Protate serves in their apprenticeship, they learn a specific set of skills that will aid them in their lifelong assignment which comes after its completion.
  Notable Frouron Protates include:
  • Mercy Wavers - She was assigned to Axaneas III of Benselot, father of Anaxaneas, in the year 4937 BA, sixty-seven years before the Emperor was born. Serving Axaneas until his death Mercy Wavers became a somewhat mythic figure in her own lifetime as she led multiple successful assaults on the fortresses of the Kingdoms of Telephos, Nuru, Hagani, and Aczê Zêrê throughout her career. Her siege tactics are still studied in war colleges today, millennia later. Mercy Wavers continued to serve the Bensel Family by becoming the first of Anaxaneas' Frouron Protates after his father died. She served at his side through the Unification Wars and when Anaxaneas was crowned Emperor, she stood at his left hand, ever vigilant. Mercy Wavers finally met her death trying to subdue rioters during the Second Elections organized by Emperor Anaxaneas in 438 of the Golden Age.
  • Eilerian Vineweaver - Assigned to the Half-Elfien Tyrant, whose name must not be known, because he was a Half-Elfien himself, Eilerian served his charge for nearly two-hundred years. And when the Half-Elfien Tyrant betrayed the Kingdoms and tried to destroy all they had achieved, Eilerian refused to betray his charge. The Matia and Frouron Protate leaders tried to sever him from their source of magical power but failed to do so. Eilerian continued to wield the power of Justice throughout the Tyrant's campaigns. Eilerian fell at the Tyrant's side engulfed by the fiery breath of the Dragon King Herensuge in 489 AF.

I love that you have characters created to back up the organization and specific details and dates that make it more realistic!

Thanks! Myria has a lot of history and legends, so I thought it would be nice to include some in the organizations' descriptions.
