The Dust Valley

The Dust Valley is a stark and rugged land, stretching for miles under the looming shadow of Gevren's Gift, the imposing mountain range that serves as its northern border. The land is mostly arid, with large stretches of sandy plains interspersed with craggy outcroppings and deep ravines. Yet there is an undeniable beauty to the landscape; at sunrise and sunset, the sands glow with hues of gold, orange, and red, while at night, the clear, open skies reveal a stunning vista of stars, made all the more brilliant by the relative lack of artificial light.   Despite the inhospitable terrain, life thrives in the Dust Valley. Hardy shrubs and cacti pepper the landscape, their deep roots reaching for scarce groundwater. Small creatures, adapted to the extreme conditions, dart between shadows during the day, becoming more active in the cooler nights. The area is also home to larger desert creatures, some of them dangerous, but most just trying to survive in the harsh environment.   In the midst of this expansive desolation, one feature punctuates the skyline like an echo of the valley's storied past - the Sand Spires. Born from the sparks that flew when Gevren, the Forgehammer, forged and lifted the moon Lunaria into the sky, the Sand Spires rise from the desert floor like sentinels of petrified sand.   The Underdark beneath the Dust Valley, a network of caves and tunnels filled with rare crystal deposits embedded in the bedrock, believed to be remnants of the Crystal Nexus. These arcane gems are a source of fascination and controversy, with their mystic properties and contentious claim by the Freeholds of Celestia. The Silnar'shala, the indigenous nomads of the Dust Valley, fiercely protect these caverns, viewing the crystals as sacred remnants meant to be left untouched.   Above ground, the Freeholds have carved a home within the unforgiving landscape. Their settlements are hewn from the rocks or built with sun-baked bricks. Though initially intended as places of refuge, these communities have evolved into thriving settlements, boasting bustling markets, efficient forges, and renown centers of learning.   Despite the extreme conditions, the people of the Dust Valley have made a life for themselves here, using their ingenuity and resilience. They've adopted sustainable techniques to harvest scant resources, including water collection methods and innovative farming practices for their limited agriculture. Yet, the Dust Valley remains a difficult and often dangerous place to live. It is a land of survival and endurance, a testament to the resilience of its inhabitants and the enduring legacy of its divine history.     History
Tracing back to a time of divine conflict, the Shattered War, which ensued after the cataclysmic event known as the Great Sundering, the Dust Valley is a scar of a time of strife and violence.   Toward the end of the Shattered War, in a bid to trap the god Vorrak, the Destroyer, the god of dreams, Somnaria, suffered a serious wound that left her weakened and vulnerable. With her own divine realm destroyed, she was left without a place of refuge to retreat and recover.   This tragic circumstance prompted Gevren, the god of the forge and the lover of Somnaria, to carry out a task of immense magnitude and compassion. They forged the moon of Myrathis, Lunaria, using the remains of a fallen elemental earth titan, to provide a sanctuary for the wounded god. As they hoisted this newly crafted celestial body into the sky, the act tore a vast scar across the surface of the world, which came to be known as the Dust Valley.   No sooner had Gevren performed this monumental act of love than a significant event in divine history occurred: the Second Convergence. The three primordial entities came together in a second moment of harmony to form the Godveil around the Material Planes. This veil was put into place to safeguard the mortal beings of Myrathis from any godly entities that might seek to claim it again for themselves.   This intervention by the primordials irrevocably separated Somnaria and Gevren. For over a thousand years, Somnaria has resided in her sanctuary on Lunaria, gradually healing from her injuries. It is believed that during this period of convalescence, she is also painstakingly restoring the Dreamweave, a task that further underscores her enduring resilience and determination.   Today, the Dust Valley remains a vivid and tangible reminder of this divine history. The scar left by Gevren's act of love continues to be seen in the landscape of the valley, a stark but meaningful testament to the celestial saga of love, sacrifice, and resilience.
