Dunvar

Once a thriving, wealthy city-state, Dunvar boasted both impressive wealth and expert craftsmanship among its citizenry. The Dunvar dwarves were also well know explorers and cartographers, who sought to explore and map the whole of the Dunvar Mountains. They funded their endaevors from the profits they through trade, which was subtantial, thanks to the rich diamond deposits in the Dunvar mine. Until, deep beneath the mountain city of Dunvar, the dwarves stumbled upon an ancient, sealed chamber that contained an unknown malevolent artifact.   The dwarves broke the seal and unwittingly unleashed the curse contained within. It began to corrupt the very essence of the mountain and its inhabitants. The ores they mined turned brittle and unusable, the once-lush underground gardens withered and died, and the dwarves themselves became afflicted with a terrible wasting disease.   The disease spread rapidly throughout Dunvar, causing the dwarves to grow weak, paranoid, and hostile towards one another. It ravaged their bodies and minds, driving them to madness and, eventually, death. Within a few short years, the once-thriving city had become a haunted, cursed ruin, a testament to the folly of tampering with dark, unknown powers.   Desperate to escape the curse, the surviving dwarves fled the mountain city and wandered the forest of Pilgrim's Green. After months of travel and hardship, they came upon a region with rich underground water sources and unique minerals. With aid from the Sylvari Kingdom, they founded a new city, which they named Dunwich, as a symbol of hope and a new beginning.   The cursed mountain city of Dunvar remains a dark, haunted place, filled with the restless spirits of those who perished under the curse. Brave or foolhardy adventurers occasionally seek out the abandoned city, drawn by legends of untold riches and powerful artifacts hidden within its depths, but few ever return from the cursed halls of Dunvar forest, and the mysterious creatures within are unwelcoming and harsh.
Dunvari is the official language of Dunvar, and subsequently Dunwich. Though it is a niche dwarven dialect that few outside of the region spoke, it happened to be the first language of Vale Estus. Following Vale's Conquest and the establishment of the Estari Dominion, Dunvari became an official language of the region, along with Elvish.
