Council of Szaly (Zah-lee)
A small nation towards the center of the continent, it shares a border with the Aldoran Sovereignty. The two nations have a tentative peace, primarily due to the flow of goods that Aldor brings in directly benefits and supports the cities under the Council of Szaly's control. This nation was established nearly 20 years prior to the Aldoran Sovereignty and had frequent feuds when it had been under rule by the Empire of Tor. Once Aldor declared independence, trade opened up and the two nations began to heal their mutual scars, beginning a long-lasting yet very tentative friendship.
The Council of Szaly is a republic, with elected leaders referred to as Representatives, who are elected once every 2 years (one from every established race in Devil's Run), barring any unforeseen event requiring re-election. The most important position of power is Chief Representative, who is selected by vote from the Representatives. The Council is fairly small and military not very powerful compared to other nations, but they have something most nations do not. Their countryside is littered with ruins of an ancient civilization that aid in protecting their settlements. The ancient devices in these ruins will occasionally activate and protect those that have lived nearby for several years. They are a peaceful nation, for the most part, but this region has always been far from safe. It is a frontier nation in its purest form, and should be traversed with caution.
The Council of Szaly is a mishmash of races and cultures. They don't always get along, and this causes strife both physically and politically within the country. That being said, the populace is fiercely welcoming to all races, especially those disenfranchised elsewhere. Tieflings, orcs, bugbears, even demons...they all have a home in lands protected by the Council. Almost all are welcome here, and the citizens feel it is the greatest nation in the world. They have adapted many contraptions from the ruins for their own use, and it makes daily life less dangerous and more enjoyable. The citizens are always eager to hear news from the outside world, as they can be somewhat out of the loop on current world events.
