Harz
Harz is at the heart of the worlds production of wool, and the creation of fine woolen cloth. It is a beautiful land of rolling hills and pastures with a smattering of patchworks of fields.
Geography
A coastal plain on the Eastern Shore of the SEA OF SHENAL. It is bounded on the North by the EDLE RIVER and on the South by the INNES RIVER. On the West it is bounded by the ROYAL DEMENSE with the boundary running from a league west of Aachen Castle on the Edle south to the confluence of the MODLING RIVER with the Innes.
It is generally flat with some rolling hills in the central plain. There is a slight rise in the North known as the UPSLAND HIGHLANDS where some small hills are. In the South the land is lower and boggy and is known as the EBENSFIELD DOWNS.
The land is ideal for crops, sheep, and horses.
History
During the days of the The Empire of Aenoch this had been a land of horse raising on the open grassy plains. It had been a pleasant land where great warrior nobles kept estates that provided their supply of war horses. Interspersed with smaller horse rearing operations that provided additional horses for the market. This sparsely populated and rich land was a pleasant place.
With the advent of Unklar it soon became one huge factory farm to feed horses and mules into the meatgrinder of the IMPERIAL ARMY. The great manor houses became barracks or stables. The small ranchers were enslaved or driven off if fortunate. The Governor sat in his administrative center of WALTENSHAW, with occasional shuttles to the port of EDENBERG to insure the shipping of the horses was going as planned.
When Baldwin I took Harz he found a devastated land with few people and some herds of wild horses. He could see the possibilities for both horses and sheep on its fertile plain. The farmers found their way here and soon crops and sheep were providing surplus grain and wool for the markets. When Baldwin II promoted the wool industry it saw an explosion of sheep, and lead to fullers, dyers, and weavers flocking to the area's two towns.
Today Harz produces much of the wool that finds itself in the high end markets on all the coasts of Aihrde.
