Madison "Amatiste" Kahori
Madison Kahori (a.k.a. Amatiste)
Short Story of Madison “Amatiste” Kahori
Madison Kahori was born in the Storm Ravens’ Seattle camp just outside the metroplex. Her childhood was spent learning the skills essential to safeguard the pack; maneuvering motorcycles and cars, handling guns, wrestling and using melee weapons.
At 12, Madison's life took a sharp turn when her parents were banished for collaborating with organleggers. In response, she adopted the name Amatiste, shedding her birth identity. Her brother followed suit, assuming his girlfriend's name. Despite their stay being permitted due to her brother's smuggling expertise, Amatiste faced mistreatment from some clan members.
When she was 14, she was abused by two male members of the clan, but Amatiste found support in Talina Salez, the leader of the Desolation Angels. Talina took her to the ripperdoc for scratchers and a contraceptive implant, telling her to use them if anyone did that again. Simultaneously, other Angels presented the evidence to the clan leadership. Upon receiving permission, they swiftly administered justice to the abusers. This ordeal granted Amatiste the opportunity to become an initiate among the Angels.
At 15, Amatiste fell in love with Lana Wolff, her closest friend and fellow out-rider trainee. Lana consistently stood up for Amatiste against clan bullies, even when Amatiste held back due to fear of losing status in the clan. They moved in together and became inseparable. Their relationship strengthened over a year, reaching a significant milestone on Amatiste’s 16th birthday when Lana gifted her a black-bladed Arasaka tanto in an amethyst-dyed sheath, featuring a playful otter, one of Amatiste’s cherished symbols. Amatiste's spirit was the Otter, and Lana often called her, her little otter, often saying her panther rode with her otter always.
During an encounter with a raider pack some months later, Lana's car was struck by a rocket, causing it to flip. Amatiste grabbed a Nomad Long Rifle, and granted her mercy. Amatiste promised her dead lover she would never be afraid again and would one day see her amongst the ancestors. The story of this battle is told here: First Fight - An Amatiste Story
During her training, Amatiste's escalating aggression raised alarms among the elders. Engaging in brutal fights with clan mates, and her intensified rage posed challenges in training and battles, prompting Talina to intervene once again. After a lengthy conversation, Talina insisted on Amatiste consulting with the healers, for therapy from Ana. Complying, Amatiste underwent the therapy, confronting the guilt and grief stemming from Lana's death. Although the process took almost a year, she eventually felt prepared to move forward.
On her 17th birthday, Talina and the other Archangels formally inducted Amatiste. They marked the occasion by giving her the iconic light tattoo, a symbol of the old gang—a design featuring black and red angel wings on her shoulders, with a crossed blade and whip on the neck between them. She now could go on missions for the Clan, sweeps for danger and even engage enemies further away from the caravan.
A few months later, Amatiste's outrider team, consisting of an armed truck and two motorcycles, discovered a gruesome scene—a destroyed campsite belonging to a Storm Ravens clan. Bodies lay strewn across the area. Amatiste and her partner, armed with shotguns, explored the site while the truck surveyed from a distance. Hearing a faint moan, Amatiste discovered a partially closed smuggler compartment behind the bodies of two adults. Inside, a slim young woman. Signaling her partner, began talking to the woman, explaining that she was here to help. As her partner joined them, they helped the young woman out of the compartment. Overwhelmed with emotion, the woman clung to Amatiste. Surprised by the strength of her embrace, Amatiste held her, not quite realizing the depth of the connection forged in that poignant moment.
Informed about the impending arrival of the vanguard with a medical truck, Amatiste escorted the woman outside, seating her on Amatiste’s bike before joining the effort to locate all the bodies. When the vanguard arrived, the woman insisted on Amatiste's presence during their examination, and introduced herself as Ana. Ana disclosed that they had recently traded for new weapons with a Vancouver fixer and had found a place to camp and settle in for the night when the attack occurred. The assailants, systematically killing everyone and searching for something, shot up all the vehicles. Ana's mother instructed her to hide in the smuggling hold of their kombi. Witnessing her parents' murder, Ana struggled to keep quiet until the scouting group arrived. Amatiste felt a deep connection, recognizing a shared loss in the young woman just a year her junior, who had lost everything, mirroring Amatiste's own experience of losing everyone she had cared for.
Ana moved in with Amatiste, initiating an unhealthy relationship born out of mutual need for companionship. While Amatiste had largely overcome Lana's death, Ana provided her with someone to hold, somebody to need her. They spent much of their time together, except during Amatiste's training. Ana, not a warrior, focused on learning the caregiving duties within the clan, which worked in their relationship dynamic well. Ana was fine with the relationship, she saw Amatiste as a protector. They both grew to care for each other, but Ana’s mental problems were seen as weakness to Amatiste’s enemies, and they took note.
One of those enemies, Todd Lavine, seized the opportunity to act. Recognizing Amatiste's vulnerability, he embarked on a campaign to manipulate Ana, insinuating that Amatiste had a lover, named Helena, in another clan within the Pack and was contemplating leaving. Todd strategically cast doubt on Amatiste's feelings for Ana, recounting the tragic tale of Lana's death, falsely claiming that Amatiste killed her in a fit of rage. Over the course of months, Ana began questioning the truth herself.
When the clan had camped close to the Seattle Metroplex, while Amatiste went into the city for a pick- up, Todd wove the final deceit, telling Ana about Amatiste's friend in the city, Tomiko, presenting her as another one of Amatiste's lovers. He planted the idea that it was the opportune moment for Amatiste to stay in the city with Tomiko, and together, they would visit "Helena" in the Eastern Eagle Clan. Upon Amatiste's return, Todd, feigning concern, assisted with unloading the vehicles and callously remarked, "Too bad you weren't here; you should take better care of your loved ones. Ana was in tears the last time I saw her."
Amatiste rushed to her tent and discovered Ana lying in a fresh pool of her own blood. Tragically, driven by despair, Ana had taken her own life, a note was on her agent screen stating her love for Amatiste, and an inability to continue without her, and saying that Todd had told her everything. Overwhelmed initially by grief, Amatiste fell to her knees. For a few moments, she held Ana, and then, rage overcame the grief, flashing white hot and demanding vengeance.
She stalked to the cargo unloading area, Lexington drawn, fully intending on killing Todd where he stood. However, Todd had been quickly whisked away by friends who knew Amatiste would seek retribution. Swearing to make him suffer before ending his life in front of many of the Clan, some Angels took her to get help and Angels went after him, but they couldn’t find him or his friends.
Over the next few years, Amatiste focused on becoming the best outrider she could. She acquired additional cyberware; a neural processor and interface plugs for mental vehicle handling. She also enhanced her style with fashionware, added two more light tattoos, and incorporated emp threading. The tattoo on her left arm was a white and brown otter with amethyst eyes holding a pistol on the upper arm, that symbolized Lana, and her spirit. The tattoo on her left arm is an Amethyst purple snake with red eyes coiled down her arm from shoulder to her hand, with the head on her hand, intermixed with tribal symbols. This was her warrior tattoo. Talina often said Amatiste struck like a viper. She was now a full-fledged member of her clan and a sister of the Angels of Nemesis.
When she was 21, during a Pack moot, Amatiste encountered Gloria, an outrider from another clan. Unlike Ana, Gloria didn't require Amatiste's protection, their connection mirrored the equality Amatiste had shared with Lana. Their first night together, marked by revelry and passion, marked the beginning of what Amatiste truly needed; true companionship, unburdened by worry. With Gloria by her side, Amatiste found a partner who would handle any challenges that came their way and helped Amatiste deal with her shadows of the past.
At 22, Amatiste and her new gunner, Tammy Volokov, received a mission to deliver goods to Seattle. After a successful drop-off, Tammy expressed a desire to visit friends. Amatiste agreed, planning to be at a bar until Tammy was ready to leave. Unbeknownst to Amatiste, Tammy had a covert assignment: eliminating Michael Edwards, a gubernatorial candidate in the Metroplex. Tammy completed the task, leaving evidence to frame Amatiste before disappearing.
Amatiste, unaware of the unfolding events, enjoyed her time at the Sake and Yake, conversing with Tomiko Misae, an old friend and daughter of Yakuza fixer Miyasato Misae, the owner. A waiter showed Tomiko a tablet indicating that Amatiste was the prime suspect in Michael Edwards' death, with the Seattle Police on high alert. Recognizing Amatiste's innocence, Tomiko instructed a couple of koban to guide Amatiste through the old city and out of Seattle. Tomiko then briefed Amatiste on the situation, urging her to leave and stay away from Seattle. She assured Amatiste that she would tell the clan about her innocence.
Upon returning to camp, Amatiste sought an audience with the Council of Elders, laying out all she knew and seeking guidance. The elders, noting the disappearance of the two individuals who had joined with Tammy, were presented with a datashard by another adversary. The datashard outlined the alleged plan and was conveniently discovered in Amatiste's tent. After careful deliberation, the elders, while believing in Amatiste's innocence, deemed the perceived threat to the clan too significant to allow her to remain. Though they refrained from outright banishment, they strongly encouraged her temporary departure. They gave her a letter of recommendation to the Snake Nation, their core ally in the Seven Nations.
As Amatiste was packing, Gloria told her if Amatiste was leaving, she was coming with her. Amatiste was pleased that Gloria came with her, how better to face your new life than with your soulmate by your side.
Approximately a month later, they made contact with the Snake Nation in Oregon and Amatiste explained the situation to the Snake Clan leadership, giving them the datashard that her Elders gave her. The leaders advised her to continue south to Night City, as it was not NUSA territory and gave her a contact among the Aldecaldos. Amatiste expressed gratitude, restocked, and headed south.
Arriving outside Night City, Amatiste and Gloria checked into the Sunset Inn, got cleaned up, and contacted the Aldecaldos to arrange a meeting the following day.
At the large encampment, they were welcomed and taken to the leaders. Amatiste greeted the leaders, once again giving the datashard that explained the situation and her capabilities. The leaders granted her permission to stay in the encampment, provided she aided in its defense against the Raffen Shiv and occasionally made deliveries. They told her they would have a meeting to determine if Gloria and Amatiste could join the family. Amatiste agreed and was given a tour by a lower-ranking member. Impressed with the organization, she noted the contrast with the Storm Ravens.
After a day, Amatiste was asked to make a delivery into the city. She and Gloria made the delivery and decided to relax at a bar. When they entered, it became evident that this was a rough establishment, marked by gang graffiti on the walls, painfully loud music, and patrons dressed in unfamiliar gang colors. The distinctive feature of the gang members was their extensive cyberware, with more than half lacking a normal face, replaced by a series of lights where eyes would be. Both women didn’t need to know the gang’s name to know this was a boostergang, something Seattle has plenty of. Knowing the danger, the women turned to leave, only to encounter two more gang members entering the bar. With a sinister laugh, they questioned the rush, and Gloria noticed many of them reaching for weapons.
Gloria, who had more cyber than Amatiste, activated her speedware, drew her Unity, and swiftly shot some gang members before anyone could react. Unexpectedly, the man in front of her had speedware as well, and she felt blades slide into her side. She managed to pull away and kick him, and Amatiste, wielding her Lexington, shot the other ganger in the groin and face. Urging Gloria to run to the car, Amatiste was unaware of Gloria's injuries. When she got the car open, she pulled out her shotgun, shot the ganger with speedware, and started the car. They sped off, and she noticed that the cars were painted with Maelstrom. Only one of the cars gave chase, and Gloria kept them back, but as they reached the freeway out of town, the Maelstrom car gave up the chase.
Amatiste cast a quick glance at Gloria, noting her injuries, but Gloria waved off concern, urging Amatiste to focus on driving. Amatiste promptly informed the Aldecaldos of their situation, highlighting Gloria's severe injuries.
Upon arrival, clan members were present to assist, and the clan trauma doc examined Gloria. Unfortunately, he could confirm that Gloria had passed away. Despite Amatiste's insistence, he explained the extent of the damage — multiple gunshot wounds and blades had sliced into her kidney, liver, and stomach. Gloria had unfortunately bled out on the way to the camp.
A woman led Amatiste aside, offering her some tequila and asked her what happened. When Amatiste mentioned the cars, the woman told her that was the Maelstrom, a dangerous gang that had a lot of cyberware. Amatiste's resolve turned grim, shedding tears as she felt she let Gloria down by not watching for signs of danger, of letting her guard down. Gloria was her anchor and losing her ignited a fierce determination and a familiar feeling of vengeance. They knew the life, and her and Gloria lived hard and fast as they knew death could come anytime, but her death was still devastating.
Meanwhile, the Aldecaldos braced for a potential attack, and clan leaders discussed the situation. It was decided to extend Amatiste membership to the Aldecaldos. Amatiste was told and given a place to park her truck permanently. They also suggested she should be careful of who knows why she was here.
Amatiste was 24 and now in a new city, she seeks employment to get some eddies and find some chummers, or as they say here, chooms. Deep down, she knows that honoring Gloria's memory involves continuing to live. Amatiste, guided by Gloria's spirit and her own determination, remains committed to life. She has a new family now, an Angel rides for the Aldecaldos!
