Rhunaar Marshes

The Rhunaar Marshes is an area found in the south west of Rhunaar, neighboring the Purple Plains and the Pillars. Within the swamp there are three main locations namely the Fief of Todahn, Crow's Den and the Resting Grounds.

Notable Locations

Fief of Todahn

A bullywug settlement found in the southern parts of the swamp, which holds an ancient human tower. The bullywugs inhabiting the settlement are lead by the offspring of Todahn, the current Toadlord. Apart from the ancient sorcerer tower, the bullywugs have a small market mostly dealing in insectoids to eat and leathers crafted from swampshark hides.

Crow's Den

The home of the mighty Hag of the Bog. A feeling of despair is in the air around this place. Bullywugs dare not venture here for fear of dread. A small house found at a large clearing within the swamp, few dare to approach

Resting Grounds

An ancient human burial ground populated by various undead. The resting grounds was from where the dark sorcerers commenced their ritual to build an undead army of their dunmer slaves.

Scenery

The Rhunaar Marshes are best described as dense swamplands. The swamp has vastly increased in size after the Rupture that lead to the splitting of Khazat from the mainland. The following creatures are commonly encountered in the swamp:

Pre-Rupture

Before the rupture these lands served as a human outpost of trade located between Khazat and Ban Grond. Within them the human town of Indolis was found. Back then the lands were used for cultivating crops and such to feed the surrounding cities. Apart from this, oil wells were found scattered through the lands. Elven slaves, the humans and dwarves held, were often send here to either work the fields or harvest oil from the springs. In addition to being a tradepost and farmland, Indolis housed a chapter of human sorcerers pursuing the Dark Arts. It's their presence the Fief of Todahn owes its iconic tower to.

Curse of the Crows

After the Rupture most of the humans, dwarves and elves inhabiting Rhunaar died by the catastrophe itself or the orc warbands. Indolis was no exception, although the human sorcerers attempted a remarkable feat here. The human sorcerers performed a small scale blood ritual using elven corpses and slaves, to drive out the orc invaders from their lands. This ritual was meant as an experiment for a larger scale version to protect their capital of Gildin. The sorcerers succeeded in their efforts and created an undead host, fueled by a Blood Heart. The sorcerers ventured on to Gildin to attempt a similar feat there, leaving one of their ranks behind. Todahn would serve as the guardian of the Blood Heart.
In the meantime however, a Hag coven had assembled near Indolis and took the foolishness of the human sorcerers to their hearts. They utilized the power stored in the Blood Heart to curse the humans of Indolis. This curse would transform the humans in small humanoid toads over time, known as Bullywugs or small toadmen to mock Todahn's name. Todahn in turn was transformed into a Giant Toad, who would come to rule the ruins of Indolis. While many generations of bullywugs passed, Todahn was cursed to watch all of them grow and perish. He named his home of Indolis the "Fief of Todahn" to forever commemorate himself.

Present Day

Little remains of the farmlands that once filled these lands. Similarly, only those that were aware the town of Indolis was once situated here would still recognize it, likely by the iconic retreat of the chapter. Many useful alchemy ingredients can be found in the Marshlands, as well as plenty of oil. In addition, salt crystals have formed over time here. The offspring of Todahn wage an everlasting war against the Hag Coven, seeking ways to destroy them.   With the arrival of The White Flame, much of the long-existing balance between the Hag Merlinda and the Fiefdom was disrupted as described in Session XXXVI: Treachery of the Bog Report. Their meddling resulted in the removal of the bullywug curse and the dead of Todahn, but at a heavy cost: the now-again-humans would never be able to produce offspring, as well as their primal instincts always haunting them.
