Y'thodhril

The Fabled first city of the Ancients.   The city of Y'thodhril, the first city, built by an ancient civilization of the 4 ancient races. The city we aren't sure even exists anymore.   "We know more about Meros, the moon, than we do about these ancients! And as far as I know, we have never sent anyone to Meros!"   ▪︎Archaeologist Sloan Snadien of the World Scholars Union   Scholars have spent generations researching what little information they can gleam off of the staggeringly few ruins scattered across the world, and what little is useful rarely leads to any discoveries. Every year we find less and less from these ruins and some researchers fear we may never discover the secrets of this civilization.   "No, I personally do not believe such a civilization existed. How could any complex civilization have come before the gods, let alone survive through the dawn war? Its a preposterous theory made by people who shunned the gods and empower mortal theories over divine knowledge."   ▪︎Saint and Head Theologian Dermanio Pastile Declinaeous Carvana of the Church of Ioun.   Just as researchers fight to discover the truth, many common folk are quick to brush aside the theories as myth and legend. Setting the civilization with other stories such as the dawn war, folk tales, and stories of ancient heroes and heroines.   Over time scholars have accumulated some theories of what may have been. Not all of them line up perfectly, but for many, having something to work off is better than nothing. Especially when it comes to something we know almost nothing about...
-=-POSSIBLE THEORIES OF THE ANCIENT CIVILIZATION AND ITS ASSOCIATED RACES-=-
  1. The city must have been massive. More massive than any city currently built, and this fact is backed up by theory #2.   2. This place was one-of-a-kind. There are a few scattered ruins left from that time, and what most researchers have gathered lead to a conclusion that not many people lived outside of Y'thodhril, evidence by the lack of the common signs of a high population area around currently known ruins across the world.   3. A calamitous event destroyed or hid the city. Most of the known ruins contain evidence that a cataclysmic event occured sometime in the past, some scholars believe that this is the reason Y'thodhril may never be found as it may simply not exist anymore.   4. No bodily remains. Another possible result of this calamity is the complete annihilation of all ancient life. As there have been no fossilized remains of any ancient race it is not hard to see the plausibility of this theory.   5. Humans were the dominant Ancient Race in Y'thodril. Nearly every human scholar links the sheer scale that human-kind has spread and grown throughout history to the theory that they were simply here earlier than the rest of the races on Mundus. While this theory has its merits it is usually disregarded by the scientific community as there is no solid evidence to back up this hypothesis.   6. The Gods may have killed off the Ancient races. Due to the appearance of the gods on Mundus so shortly after the destruction of the ancient races, theologians and historians find this theory to be at least plausible if not truth. Some theologians believe that the ancient races had commited such a horrific crime agaisnt existence that the universe birthed the gods in order to bring balance back to itself.   7. This race created magic. Or it at least had something to do with its creation. One of the only artifacts that have been discovered were a set of scrolls, in nearly pristine condition, that contain the roots of all magic theory. These scrolls were key in the creation of our modern magic theory, although many believe that we may never be able to acheive the full potential of magic locked away in these scrolls.

Defences

All known ruins from this period appear to have been built from some incredibly light and strong black-blue metallic alloy, made from unknown metals. This alloy appears to the stronger than adamantium with an incredible density for its light weight. Researchers assume the same material was used in Y'thodhril.

Assets

Presumably, vast amounts of advanced materials and powerful artifacts.

Guilds and Factions

It is theorized that since there was a rather strong magical presence in Y'thodhril, at least according to the only scrolls found, there must have been a collective of incredibly intelligent people dedicated to their ancient magic.

History

Nothing is known about the history of Y'thodhril.

Architecture

Large structures made of the mysterious alloy and other advanced materials, incredible acts of architecture, and alien designs. All signs that have been verified by researchers and architects on site(s).

Geography

Long rolling flats filled green grass and ancient crops, all being tended by ancient constructs of massive scale. The land has been leveled for thousands of miles, and the only standing structure was the sprawling city that was Y'thodril.   Nothing is known for sure, but such an advanced society must've been a utopia, and the city built to show off their incredible power and capabilities.

It sounds like there could be a really interesting settlement to garner from this!   There are two competing narratives in the article: nothing is known and we can only guess, followed by some pretty exact information. The exact demographics, population number and date of founding. I favor the former narrative and think you could lean into that by removing some of that exact information or wrap it in more evocative prose. For example, something like 'judging by the size of the apartment blocks, the population must have been...'   I'm not familiar with the rest of the setting, so the exact wording would depend on what the world is like now. If it's a roughly medieval setting, that population number is *staggeringly* massive and so they might not even have the exactness to describe it well.   As it is, I couldn't quite figure out if the ruin is a known location that people can visit or not. Theory 2 seem to suggest both at once, with the term "known ruin" and also that it doesn't exist anymore.   It might be worthwhile to clean up some of the headers: when all they say is "unknown", it just clutters things up. You could say the same with in a more narrative way, as one piece. It could also be nice to start the top of the article with more about what the settlement is, so we know what's being talked about in some detail before we go into the theories. If you want to add a little flavor, quotes from scholars, clergy or conspiracy theories could be fun!   Last of all, this sounds less like a colony and more like.. Well, a primary settlement. The first city, after all. Something to consider if you are going after that contest :)   Good luck!

Thank you for your advice! I understand the somewhat hypocritical writings, I hadnt checked back up on my previous writings before I submitted the article. I will make sure to fix up some things! The colony contest was more to push myself and for inspiration, but again thank you for the advice. I will look over everything.

I wouldn't call it hypocritical, as that sounds too negative. Lets call it forgetful, or a foundation to build on. ;)   Challenges are absolutely great for inspiration, so lets spread the inspiration :D
