Unlikely Allies and Hidden Plots
Finally free of academic obligations, Zero Law picks up a now cold investigation. Finding a new lead pointing to the ever-dangerous Rogue Isles. Convincing her new companions that she'll be fine with just the assistance of local friendly forces quickly proves a less than grand idea...
"Wait, Naeva, let her go! Please! We can explain!" Zero's frightened voice chimed through the coms.
Visi felt the dark magic pinning her to the wall suddenly fade, gasping as she fell to the floor. Naeva's threatening tone faded to confusion. "Zero? You're alright?"
"Yeah, I'm alright, and in one piece! Not sure I'd be either of those right now without Visi's help..."
Oh thank god I put that into this suit... Visi thought as she finished gasping for breath. Standing again and looking at Naeva, who looked confused even under the hood and mask. The merc couldn't keep mild irritation out of her own voice, however, "And I'm still helping her, since you and Longbow can't seem to do things right around here."
Naeva visibly grimaced, hesitating for a second "If you really are helping out, I won't stop you. But I would still like to know what you two are doing now."
Zero eagerly piped up first "We're continuing my investigations here."
"Starting in this base, piecing together what happened in the attack." Hopefully the kid's smart enough not to mention digging for surviving data...
Naeva folded her arms, speaking instead: "Who do you think attacked the base then? I got mixed reports from the other bases that picked up this one's chatter."
"So far just Skyraiders and marks from a local quartet of annoyances powers'. Arachnos was stirred up a bit from the fighting but I don't think they were involved at all. Haven't seen anything answering any 'whys' yet."
The shadow mage lowered her head "Damn," she sighed and looked up at Visi again "Good luck to you two, if I can provide any support while I'm still here I will. But you, Visi, you keep Zero safe, or I will have your head."
Visi snarled slightly under her helmet, muting her comms for a minute and stepping threateningly toward Naeva "I'm not the one that let an inexperienced rookie go to the Rogue Isles with only Longbow as her backup. I don't care how persuasive she might've been, it almost got her killed because no one stronger was around to help."
Naeva grimaced and lowered her head, stepping back as Visi turned away. Switching her comms back to internal and unmuting them to hear Zero's confused voice "What was that? Why'd you mute the comms?"
"Nothing, Zero, don't worry about it."
