Bound in Stardust Series

Kyle Curakkis first hatched the idea for what would become Bound in Stardust shortly after Kayla Kavanaugh's disappearance, but the novel would not fully come to fruition after her return and certain revelations about where she'd been for the intervening seven years.   The plot, such as can be described, follows Brett, a high school student pulled into intergalactic affairs when an alien craft abducts his crush, Tilly. In his efforts to rescue her, Brett breaks into Area 51 and steals an experimental spacecraft, evades efforts of the US Air Force to stop him, and flies into space with no clear direction. Despite his fish-out-of-water status and general cluelessness, Brett does track down Tilly, now a captive of the general of an alien army. Over her protests that his actions could lead to an all-out war that the humans will lose utterly, Brett charges ahead with his rescue efforts anyway. The novel ends with Brett and Tilly in a stolen spacecraft on the run from the alien army.   A sequel is in the works.   As to the first book, though it doesn't have very wide reach, many locals of Esterholt, Ohio, have read it, and opinions on it are remarkably negative. Erin Kavanaugh argues that it trivializes her team's efforts to search for her sister, and Ta'zhen was notably outraged at implications and overtures made by the text that she was in a sexual and/or romantic relationship with Tzim-Sha. Besides the content issues, it is considered "typical" of a self-published work, with a number of typos, structural and formatting mistakes, and overall dire need of an editing team.

This made me laugh a little. Such a tone deaf novelisation of real events. XD

Exactly! It's almost comical in a way.
