Thurgunn

Thurgunn is a kingdom of ash dwarves in the north-western corner of the Maarlands.

Culture

Ash dwarves are a severe people with a largely grim outlook on life. They work industriously and consider their bleak world-view as a strength, seeing themselves as realists. They see themselves as the true bastion of dwarven strength, as opposed to their weak and pampered Nulladoran counterparts.   Thurgunn has a dictatorial system of government and citizens who break the law are severely punished. Additionally, citizens who are seen as being troublesome or suspicious are frequently locked away in prison camps, even when they haven't broken any laws.   It is illegal for citizens of Thurgunn to cross the River Ora without permission from their government. Thurgunn's border is strictly controlled and patrols cover most areas, making illicit travel difficult. Nevertheless, a number of ash dwarves have managed to leave the kingdom and freely roam the southern Maarlands and the rest of Ashun.

History

Before the Collapse

Hill dwarves arrived in the Maarlands around 250 BC after Clan Fairstone was exiled from Nullador. They settled in the northern reaches of the Maarlands at a time when the volcanic ashfalls were relatively mild, allowing them to survive the region and adapt to the ash.   Clan Fairstone returned to its despotic ways when they built the city of Grimrock and founded the kingdom of Thurgunn. Their reign was relatively short-lived and they were deposed again by their own loyalists from Clan Greyhammer.   Clan Greyhammer ruled until the Collapse.

During the Collapse

Due to their proximity to the Ashmounts, the fledgeling kingdom of Thurgunn was severely affected by the return of the fire titan Abanasi. Much of the kingdom was destroyed.

Post-Collapse

After the Collapse, Thurgunn had lost its ruling clan. There were several decades of infighting before Clan Darkstone rose to rule the kingdom. Clan Darkstone adopted a dictatorial approach to ruling and has maintained their grip on power to this day.   Under Clan Darkstone, Thurgunn has been an insular society that trades very little with the outside world. Their only formal diplomatic relations are with Chatha, which is also their only trading partner.   Under Clan Darkstone, Thurgunn has also adopted a hostile stance towards Nullador. Clan Darkstone views Nullador as their rightful home and have invested much in propaganda throughout Thurgunn teaching their citizens as much. Clan Darkstone has embraced the view that their clan is the inheritor of Clan Fairstone and that they are the rightful rulers of Nullador.
