Greymurk

Greymurk is the swampland home of the Saurids. They live in tribes and are generally peaceful with all races except Dragonborn. After a long history of Dragonborn invading their swamps and stealing their people to essentially become slaves in Draconir, they have built up some defences along their northern border. The only cities in Greymurk, if they can be called that, are Sunthrek (more of a fort) and Gralnoor (a small settlement built mainly for receiving guests from the south).   The deepest area of the swamp is The Mire. It is very difficult and inhospitable terrain. Nobody other than a sarcon is adapted enough to traverse it.   Saurids do not worship the usual gods of the other races, though they acknowledge their existence. The primary god of Saurids is the crocodile god Seht, who is said to sleep in the deepest part of the Mire until times when he is most needed, when he wakes up to defend Greymurk (mostly from Draconir). Therefore, crocodiles are considered sacred animals by the Saurids and harming them is a crime.   Some scholars speculate that Seht is some kind of demigod, but his true nature is not known. Scholars have also speculated that Saurids are related to the Sarcon race native to Ashun.

Culture

Saurids live in communal tribes of around 50 individuals. They value being useful to their tribes and contributing to the communal life. Tribes distribute important jobs to the members most suited to them, with some members being responsible for gathering food, others being warriors, and others being teachers or mages.   Saurid tribes also communally hatch and raise their young. All of the eggs of a tribe are kept together and tended to by specific tribe members, called "Munkars" - meaning hatchers. When hatched, young Saurids are raised collectively by the tribe. Sarcon parents do not usually favour their own young over the others, and often do not even know which children hatched from their own eggs.   Unlike Draconians, Saurids do not have any taboos against magic. Those in a tribe who are skilled with magic are taken on as students by the tribe's mages. Mages are often considered the wisest members of the tribe and their counsel is frequently sought when important decisions need to be made.   Saurids do not usually build solid structures. Their tribes will usually build small wooden huts for communal activities and basic shelter and sleep in hamocks hung from trees in the swamp. Sauridian scales require some moisture in order to remain healthy and so they do not build shelter designed for protecting against rain. Pathways between areas in a tribe's land frequently require traversal though the muddy waters of the swamp.

History

Throughout its history, Greymurk has been an inhospitable swampland. It is one of the few regions of Morn that has changed very little since the dawn of creation.
