Draconir

Draconir is a nation in the northeastern region of Nilandra. It is home to Draconians, also known as Dragonborn, as well as kobolds.   The dragonborn live in a strict society of militaristic hierarchy. They consider themselves to be the descendants of dragons, the most powerful and noble creatures.   Draconir society generally distrusts magic. They prefer martial prowess and find magic dishonourable. The Dragonborn value the concept of “what’s in your belly”, referring both to their breath weapons but also to their courage and integrity, and think magic users don’t have strength “in their belly”.   Kobolds also live in Draconir. They are considered below Dragonborn as they are less close to the noble creature that is a dragon. They are second class citizens and used as servants to the dragonborn.   Dragonborn also consider Saurids to be their kin and in the same level as kobolds. Greymurk, according to them, is a rebellious region of Draconir. The Sarcons there have a duty to serve the dragonborn, who are the closest to dragons, and are neglecting their duty.   Draconir has attempted to conquer and annex Greymurk many times, but they keep failing. They don’t like this fact - their superior military, numbers, and training should easily defeat the swamp dwelling sarcons. But the sarcons keep repelling them.   Dragonborn mythology states that the dragons were originally created by all the creator gods together, but Mortus claimed them as his own. When Mortus died, this took away the immortality of dragons and therefore also took away the immortality of Dragonborn. Dragonborn see Mortus as the god of mammals, but as a traitor to the reptillian races. They see the mammalian races as their enemies because of this.   Their mythology states that the original dragons of Morn fought, chromatic vs metallic vs gem. In the fighting, the dragons’ tears became the Dragonborn, while their dung became the kobolds and Saurids.   Draconir is currently ruled by Mazzudor, an ancient sapphire dragon who is a demigod of Bahamut.

History

Ancient Times

As one of the oldest races on Morn, Draconian civilisation was founded well before the Collapse. Initially spanning the majority of Nilandra, Draconians developed a proud martial tradition. Kobolds and Saurids were accepted as members of Draconian society early on, however they were considered to be a lower class than Dragonborn.   Draconian society generally mistrusted the warm-blooded races in its earliest days. With their belief that the warm-blooded races were the result of Adapa's deception of Bahamut and the theft of their immortality, Draconians saw them as the naturally inferior race and forced many of them into slavery. As their empire expanded across Nilandra, their power grew.

War with Eldrin

Draconir's longstanding hostility towards the frost elves of Eldrin began long before the Collapse. Not much is known about the origins of their conflict, but it is generally understood that the arrival of ancient elves in Nilandra was the beginning of the decline of the Draconian Empire. As elves settled east of Thaerwood, they likely came into conflict with the Draconian Empire. The specific hatred towards snow elves likely originated when the elves settled in the northern territories that were originally claimed as part of the Draconian Empire (even though the territory was widely settled by Draconians at the time).

Before the Collapse

Draconian control of most of the continent of Nilandra continued up to the Collapse. Draconians saw the other races emerging and took many of them as slaves, justifying this practise with the belief that the warm-blooded races both were inferior to the reptillian races and also that they needed to be civilised.

Post-Collapse

After the Collapse, Draconian society turned sharply against the free use of magic. They blamed magic in part for the catastrophic events of the Collapse - specifically, they blamed the warm-blooded races' easy access to magic for its misuse. Magic became heavily regulated in Draconir and culturally it became associated with the deceitful and lazy ways of the warm-blooded races.   Draconir did continue to allow some citizens to use magic, however. Permission from the monarch was required. They also continued to take slaves from the warm-blooded races, predominantly humans living in settlements across the southern region of central Nilandra.

The Rise of the Carenthian Empire

Around 550 PC, there were skirmishes between Draconir and the Carenthian Empire as they were beginning to expand. Draconir's empire was already in decline at the time. In 739 PC the Pearl War began. This remains one of the longest wars in Morn's history, lasting nearly 50 years. The Carenthian Empire expanded north, taking territory from Draconir through conquest. The Carenthians felt particularly motivated to fight because Draconir had been conducting raids into their territory to capture human slaves. During this period, Draconir also found itself fighting a second war, the Second War of Snow and Scales, against the snow elves who were aiming to take back the southern region of Eldrin. Draconir suffered severe losses in both wars.

The Cold Blood Exodus

By around 1000 PC, the Carenthian Empire occupied much of Central Nilandra, taking up around half of territory Draconir historically claimed. Tensions with Draconir had existed for several centuries by this point, largely due to Draconir seeing the expansionist intentions of the empire and the empire's anger at the Draconian's practise of taking non-Draconians, including humans, as slaves.   In 1053 PC, the Carenthian Empire went to war with Draconir in what became known as the Cold Blood Exodus. This war lasted for several years and was heavily destructive. During these years, Carenthia slowly gained ground to its north and steadily captured Draconian territory. In 1108, the two sides agreed to a peace deal that granted Carenthia large swathes of previously Draconian territory. This granted Carenthia most of its current day borders.

Hundred Days War

In 1180 PC, the Hundred Days War began. After decades of tensions between Carenthia and Draconir, Draconir launched an attack in northern Carenthia aimed at reclaiming its lost territory and capturing much of Carenthia's territory. However, due to numerous factors, Carenthia achieved such tremendous battlefield success during this time that Draconir was forced to capitulate and sacrifice slightly more territory to Carenthia. Draconir was also forced to relinquish all non-reptillian slaves in their territory to Carenthia.

Carenthian Annexation of Eldrin

In 1195 PC, the frost elves of Eldrin voluntarily ceded their territory to Carenthia and formally joined the empire. This was largely due to strategic reasons. Draconir, a long-standing enemy of Eldrin, had gained a dragon demigod as its ruler. Eldrin's leaders felt they needed the protection of the empire that had successfully defeated Draconir on the battlefield. In Draconir, this was seen as a major threat. Their two most hated foes had joined forces. The attack they had been planning on Eldrin was cancelled.
