Tidewatch Captain Miraen
Biography
Captain Miraen commands the Tidewatch, the humble but fiercely respected river fleet of Krog Nocrum. Born and raised in the river, she grew up swimming the murky canals and fishing from plank walkways beside her childhood friend Skarrix Ironscale, who now serves as the Warrior Seat on the city’s council. Their bond forged through countless skirmishes and hardships makes Miraen one of the only people Skarrix personally trusts—a fact she never takes lightly. When outside threats rise from the waterways—pirates, cultists, or mercenaries testing the town’s defenses—Miraen is the first on the deck of her flagship, the Skullwake, barking orders and driving prow-first into danger. She leads a compact fleet of retrofitted skiff-boats, fog-cutters, and swamp-prowlers, each modified for ambush, speed, and swamp maneuverability. Though Krog Nocrum is often dismissed by outsiders, any who’ve tried to raid its rivers learn that the Tidewatch doesn't forgive trespassers. Her legend has spread beyond the city—bards speak of her blade flashing in the river mist, of storm-chants she shouts as she drives foes into whirlpools, and of how she once boarded a ship by launching herself from a mangrove tree. Miraen is a blue-skinned aquatic, her features fierce and full of energy. Her seafoam-toned skin glints slightly with the sheen of a river predator, and her sharp ears and red braid whip in the wind when she's moving into action. Her eyes are keen and defiant, and her wide-toothed grin has become as recognizable as her curved riverblade. She wears a sleeveless green and crimson jerkin, patched with ship leathers and symbols of her command. Her boots and greaves are reinforced with tide-burnished metal, and she carries a curved saber etched with wave motifs, always freshly oiled and ready. A series of vials and gadgets—river-smoke bombs, alchemical fog beads, water-breath potions—hang at her belt, hinting at her readiness for both land and sea combat. Loud, fearless, and joyfully intense, Miraen is a storm in a bottle. She leads with heart first, blade second, and reason third—but never blindly. She’s fiercely protective of her crew, her fleet, and her city, and she carries herself like a living embodiment of Krog Nocrum’s resistance and pride. She’s offbeat and often dramatic, known to make grand speeches on docks and shout battle cries that confuse and embolden in equal measure. But under her showmanship lies sharp tactical instinct—she’s outmaneuvered larger, better-funded fleets with a smile and a mangled map more than once. She’s also surprisingly warm-hearted, especially with young fighters or those down on their luck. While she holds her childhood bond with Skarrix close, she’s earned the respect of nearly everyone in the city through bold action, loyalty, and unshakable passion for justice.
