Session 80: The Druid's Grove

General Summary

The party make camp in the Heathmoors and set their watches for the night. The first watch passed with the evening seeming surprisingly peaceful, despite hearing the occasional wolf howl in the distance. The members on watch realize that the campfire seems to be burning dimmer and the wind is specifically blowing away from the direction the wolf howls seem to be coming from.   As the second watch rose, Illevaere began to notice that there was a horseman in the distance that began to chase after some of the wolves that drew close to camp. They noticed a hind in the distance that drew a pack of wolves after it, drawing them away from the party’s camp. Illevaere stealthily tracked the wolves and the hind, finding that the hind led the pack back toward the Lycanthrope camps, noticing that the hind’s tracks seemed to simply disappear after moving through an arch of reeds. Illevaere also saw that there were about 20 to 25 campfires out by the moonwell, each one seeming to have its own pack of lycanthropes there.   Illeavere returns to the camp, informing the group of the large numbers of gathered lycanthropes and the party realized that they needed to consider their approach. As Myohn rose for the third watch, he sensed that the wind that was blowing away the scent of the camp carried the scent of brook and bawn with it, and it seemed as if there were at least three Fey entities that were protecting the camp.   The singing of the song, The Longing of the Wildbound, was heard through the camp at night, heard by everyone in the party.   In the morning, the party discussed numerous options on how to approach, infiltrate, or attack the lycanthrope camps outside of the moonwell. Ultimately, the party divided up the bundles of wolfsbane between them and Illevaere would head in first to create a druid’s grove encompassing the Moonwell and the area just around it, though the creation of the grove required a ritual that would last 10 minutes.   Illevaere made their way to the moonwell and began making the grove, successfully hiding from the packs. During this time, Levi and Obadiah each approached the camp, using their predatory and lycanthropic natures to help them blend into the camps.   Levi noticed a human who was being asked a question by a lycanthrope, but called him Ulfr. Ulfr then shifted to his lycanthropic form and transformed into a large Werewolf hybrid form. Levi saw this and he immediately felt the power of the apex werewolf, as he felt a primal and natural fear of the apex predator. There is an instinct to run, but the knowledge that running marks you as prey and by every law of nature, the apex would be right to hunt and kill you. Levi’s predatory nature saved him from this primal instinct.   Levi moved within the bounds of the druid grove and met the eye of one of the feral werewolves in the group that Ulfr was speaking to. Levi asserted his dominance and the werewolf looked down. Seeing this, Ulfr approached Levi and told him that this was not a time for challenges among one another, that they are all unified as one pack here.   However, Ulfr sensed that something was different and wrong with Levi and as he began to question, Levi attacked. Illevaere was able to get one of the bundles of wolfsbane into the fire burning near Ulfr. Obadiah tossed his bundle into one of the campfires surrounded by pack and the rest of the party began to charge onto the battlefield.   Tertius had given a potion of heroism to his mount, Strawberry, and he rode her toward the camps, tossing in two bundles to the camps between the party and the battlefield proper.   Aisling tossed a bundle into one of the fires and began to fight the lycanthropes that moved to surround her. Myohn moved onto the field invisibly and cast two spells at Ulfr that he used his will to avoid. Illevaere cast moonbeam on Ulfr, who also struggled, but shook off its effects. Illevaere also brought up a concealing fog and entangling roots within the area of the now sanctified grove and they also awakened two trees, now animated by their druidic magic, to attack the lycanthropes.   Ulfr, engaged in melee with Levi, began to regenerate his wounds while he was restrained by the tangling roots, but was still able to sound his horn, the Call of the Hunt, causing all of the wolves and lycanthropes to momentarily answer howls and barks that were heard in the distance.
