Session 71: Baremin Barleyhare, Hero of the Realm

General Summary

Nortle checked out the Find the Queen, three card Monte style game at one of the booths that was run by a Tiefling, Malrius Harken. The person ahead of Nortle seemed to win easily and the first couple of bet with Nortle went in her favor. However, after being coerced into betting more coin, the tiefling's skill at manipulating the cards seemed to grow, and another younger tiefling , Nephmir Harken, in the crowd caused a number of distractions to catch Nortle off-guard and make it harder for her to follow the card movements. After losing a gold, Nortle left the stall.   Levi and Tertius went to the Catch the Greased Pig game where Levi was eager to participate. Esme Kelmen, the wife of farmer Arthur Kelmen running the game seemed interested in Levi after the pigs reacted so intensely toward his approach, sensing that he was a predator. Instead of chasing the pig, Levi approached it and headbutted the pig, knocking it unconscious and, technically, winning. While the farmer seemed annoyed at this method, his wife told him that it was just Levi's nature and he should get a prize. He was given a goat mask, as well as a leather crown that Levi gave to Tertius. Levi sensed the predator inside of the the farmer's wife, Esme, who seemed to sense the same in Levi. She told Levi to stick around after the fair and join them as they are going to have a bit of fun. Levi agreed to meet them later, then went off to warn the rest of the party what he had uncovered.   Aisling and Myohn were flooded by the crowd after their performance, eventually being pestered by a brother and sister, Brody O'Reilly and Ruth O'Reilly. Ruth, the younger of the pair, excitedly demonstrated her acrobatic ability, which included somersaults that resulted in her back bouncing against the floor. She told Aisling that the boy outside of the fortune teller tent read her fortune since she didn't have the money to see the real fortune teller and he said that she would be a princess and a ballerina and have cats.   Brody, meanwhile, spoke with Myohn. Brody had an obsession with lizards and reptiles and pointed out that Myohn head was large and so he knew he was a boy, and that since he is bright yellow, he knows that he is poisonous. He asked Myohn if his tail was torn off, if he would grow a new one. He also showed him his pet lizard and said that there are no snakes in the isles, so when he went into the ten-in-one, he asked the snake lady if she was really a slow worm lady instead, since they look like snakes and are native, and she got mad and got him removed from the tent.   The pair were then approached by the Halfling proprietor of the carnival, introducing himself as Mr. Goety. He said that he heard that they were quite impressive and saw that they were still listed for a later performance. He told them that he would not miss it and said that if it was good, he might be interested in hiring them for a performing job with the carnival.   While waiting to get into the ten-in-one, Illevaere saw Princess Ireltharis Alestair and Baremin Barleyhare, both incognito and enjoying the festival undercover. They are excited to see Illevaere and Ireltharis asked if Tertius was with them. She says that she is posing as just a mundane tourist and that Baremin is posing as her date. Ireltharis asks Illevaere if they are here just for the fair, then mentions that a couple of flocks of sheep have disappeared and perhaps they can help Baremin find out what happened. Illevaere tells them about the werewolves they are tracking and Baremin wants to inform the guards who are stationed at the fair, but is convinced by Ireltharis to do so after the ten-in-one.   The group head into the ten-in-one, finding the two-headed bull is really just a calf, but seemed to be a real birth defect, though it passed and is now stuffed. Leopold the Living Ghost was just an albino with some minor illusion magic. Titus the Titan, the Strongest Man in the World, bent bars and then arm wrestled spectators for money. Adreline the Snake Lady was not half-snake as advertised, but did have a number of snakes with her. Her eyes had slitted pupils and seemed real. Elandra the Contortionist was mundane, but impressive. Illevaere spotted the mirrors that hid the Headless Woman's head, though her 'alchemist' partner saw Illevaere and said that his 'daughter' was beheaded for worshipping Caena. The Devil's Own Fire-Eater was a mundane tiefling fire eater. The Head of the All-Father was an actual decomposing head of an Oleander soldier that the crowd was encouraged to boo and try to hit with coing they threw at it. Gerald the Sword Swallower and Kathryn the Sword Swallower ran a swordswallowing act, and finally, Lulu the Tattooed Woman had arcane runes tattooed on her and, while they looked ominous, when speaking with Illevaere, she admitted that she found them in a book and that they just looked neat.   After the ten-in-one, the different groups rejoined and Levi informed them about the greased pig farmers and the invitation after the carnival in the wee hours. They realized that there might be more lycanthropes within the carnival and when Baremin returned to them, he stated that he did not recognize the two guards at the guard booth and after warning them about lycanthropes that he was being followed by one of them.   Levi saw this and approached the false guard, recognizing the scent of a predator on him, and Levi convinced the guard that he would take care of Baremin. Upon leading Baremin out, Levi impressed the guards who truly though that he was going to kill Baremin. Levi took Baremin to Caer Craftenor while Ireltharis joined them. With Ireltharis' help, they were given a quick escort to Queen Emeldawn and Levi explained the connection with lycanthropes and Baremin offered to take men armed with silver to attack the lycanthropes on Levi's signal.   Levi then returned to the carnival as Aisling and Myohn were giving their late performance. Once again, the combination were flawless and drew a rapturous applause using music as well as acrobatics and fire. Mr. Goety offered the pair a positon traveling with the circus, but they turned down the offer stating that they had other commitments.   As the party waited for the carnival to end, they went through the stalls and stands to try to find more lycanthropes. Levi sensed the predator in Adreline the Snake Lady and the tiefling boy who was helping his brother with the Find the Queen game. During their exploration, the group stopped at the fortune teller, Mommy Fortuna, and each of them got their fortune read, each turning over three cards.

Fortunes

Levi

The Great Bear: The Great Bear is the guardian of the forest ways and holds the power of life and death over those who transgress its laws. The bear watches over the burial mound, which offers a place of stillness and peace and rest, wherein a healing process, either physical or mental, can be completed. The new, whole, reconstituted person lies hibernating, full of potential, ready to meet the coming spring with energy and joy. The only thing in life that is assured is that, if you wait long enough, it will change. It is not clear if it is you in the burial mound, processing change, or if you are the bear, guarding and protecting another who is vulnerable during their change. But judgment is linked to this card: judgment of you and your judgment of others. But honesty is the key. Be honest, be forgiving, be patient, but most of all, be assured that change is at hand. Remember, the universe has a long memory. Nothing is ever forgotten.   Five of Arrows (Frustration): Frustration is the enemy of any pursuit that requires self-control and stillness. The hunter here has unfocused energy and anger that leads to his releasing inaccurate arrows or lashing out in an uncontrolled manner and missing the target, wasting valuable resources and energy. Frustration is ungrounded energy that works against you and is better deployed in resolving your own challenges. Take time to steady your aim and ignore any detractors. Stay on target and loose your arrows at your goals with a cool and purposeful precision.   The Ancestor: The ancestor stands at the edge of winter and spring, marking a change that is coming. A new cycle is beginning and the ancestor is there to assist. If you follow the tracks on the card, you see that you have been following the ancestor, you have been moving in the direction from the start of your journey. But the ancestor stands between a gateway of silver birch trees. You are coming to a time when you will pass through the portal, leaving the past behind, stepping from winter into spring. The ancestor will not pass beyond this portal, but you should take all that you have gained from them and carry it with you into your new cycle.

Illevaere

The Stag: The stag is the forest king and guardian. The polished axe head is a manifestation of the will to change the environment, but not always for good, and his shield, which bears the symbolic oak, reminds us that we must protect our natural lands. Forgiveness and reward are not appropriate to the Stag. They are Human ideas which have no reality in natural lore. One reaps what one has sown. The justice it dispenses is long lasting and it is both merciful and irrevocable. On a personal level, some kind of adjustment or interaction must take place. This is a time to welcome the justice that has arrived with the coming of spring and the fire of creation. Face the coming season with honesty and integrity and trust to right and appropriate action. The land and its king are one.   The Moon on Water: The moon on water shows that you have reached a point where there is no visible pathway for a traveler, however, the reflective light illuminates the landscape showing that there may yet be discovered new ways to move forward. The moon on water marks a time of inner transformation, initiation or awareness. This may take the form of a desire to investigate or study a doctrine, philosophy, or esoteric pursuit. But from there, you can begin to wrestle with the concept that consciousness is not within you, but that you are within the consciousness of the universe.   Two of Stones (Challenge): Female hares box for domination and territorial rights to breed. Many challenges or rivalries are born of insecurity. What is not clear in the card is if you are one of the hares, or if others are competing over you. Holding your own ground and defending your position can be achieved by keeping in touch with pure motivations and holding on to personal integrity and sincerity. Some competition and honest differences of opinion can be productive and even beneficial. Remain clear and focused on your objectives and stay firm with your ethical efforts to proceed with a plan or project.

Aisling

Page of Vessels: Equally at home on land or in water, the otter’s ability to move between these spheres makes it sacred. This is something that you will have to emulate, as you are already caught between two spheres–that of human and Elf, that of Northlander and Daoine. You will have to keep that balance moving forward, knowing when to embrace one world more than the other, but never forgetting your ability to survive in each. There are parts of you that exist in opposing worlds and you are the unity of them, able to represent cooperation between them rather than an isolation of them.   Three of Vessels (Joy): Three cranes dance with one another, forming a triangle with their bodies and wings. This card represents celebration within a communal group or family, welcoming the coming of new life or fortune. Being able to be joyful and celebrate life fully in gratitude for the amazing gifts we share is not something easily accomplished by everyone. Celebration brings warmth to coldness, and there are those around you whose icy hearts need to melt. Sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to be completely fulfilled and to experience joy and to be strong and social enough to understand its importance. Sometimes that same permission needs to be offered to others if they will not accept it by themselves.   The Archer: The archer holds the longbow ready to release with goosefeather and flint fletched arrows. The bow’s importance both as a tool for survival and a tool for defense cannot be underestimated. For many, the bow is a powerful link to our past, and the patience required to master it connecting the Archer with an ancient life-or-death experience. Many archers place written spells on their arrows, giving them a quiver full of potentials, while stringing the bow grants the wood the potential for the release of energy. The key to releasing the quiver of arrows is a steady and relaxed state, both physically and mentally. Take careful stock of what you wish to achieve, why, and how you will go about it. Then harness your potential by filling your quiver with all the talents, knowledge and cunning you possess and string the ‘bow of burning gold’ with the ‘arrows of desire’. Take a deep breath and be calm. It is time to let your soul take flight.

Myohn

Queen of Arrows (Swan): The swan is a strong and regal protector, but it signifies a state of separation, bringing with it sorrow, privation, and misfortune. You find yourself in new rivers to swim. Truth needs to be spoken to avoid misunderstanding. You need to find freedoms in the midst of restraint. Though you are on new rivers, it does not mean that they will not empty into the same place as the old ones you swam upon. You have been separated from something and though you do not know where this river leads, it may yet return you to the same point you left from, but it may be someplace wholly new.   The Wanderer: The Wanderer is both an end and a beginning. One journey has already come full circle and, as you distill your life experience into sacred memory and put the past and its burdens to rest, the future waits patiently for you to make the first move. The wanderer is poised on the edge of a white chalk cliff, preparing to step across the abyss and into the wilds beyond. Though ahead lies the faint suggestion of a rainbow arch. This step is being taken with open arms. Now is not the time to let fear of falling or sad disillusion to hold you back. It is time that you are stepping ahead, your arms should be open, willing to trust the path that you are taking.   Four of Bows (Celebration): Four finished, but unstrung longbows are held by joyous figures dancing in celebration to the bounty of the season. The longbows are unstrung, relaxing the taunt wood that is usually strained and bent in anticipation of battle. This does not mean that there were no hardships or battles waged, but rather, there is a time to relax the strain and to enjoy the bounty of your deeds. You will need to recognize that time and share the bounty of good fortune with those that you love and respect and allow them to indulge in the joys their work has wrought.     Tertius did not speak of his fortune after leaving, though Levi smelled the scent of boy on him when he exited the fortune teller tent and realized that he had instead seen Boora Coven, promising Levi that he would tell him about it later.
