Mournwing

Mournwing

Mournwing is a Fey raven whose wings carry the weight of sorrow and decay, a dark sentinel who serves as companion and messenger to Gossamer in the Court of Blight. Tasked with the duty of seeking out those who have succumbed to disease and death, Mournwing’s watchful eyes sweep across the Court’s domain, ever vigilant for signs of life’s inevitable end. His arrival is a harbinger of decay—a silent omen that the rot has claimed another victim and that Gossamer’s hand is needed to guide what remains.   Mournwing’s feathers, sleek and glossy, are the color of midnight, but they shimmer with an iridescent sheen of sickly greens and purples when caught in dim light. His eyes, deep pools of polished obsidian, seem to absorb the light around them, reflecting not the world as it is, but the lingering shadow of death that clings to those who cross his path. His beak, sharp and curved, carries the scent of damp earth and decay, as though he has spent a lifetime perched upon the graves of the fallen.   Mournwing’s task is one of quiet observation and grim diligence. He is Gossamer’s eyes across the decaying lands, watching over the Court’s domain with an unyielding patience that only a creature bound to death can possess. When the breath of life fades from a body—whether mortal, fey, or flora—Mournwing is there, bearing silent witness to the inevitable. His call, a mournful cry that echoes like the wind through dead branches, carries with it the weight of the departed, serving as an unspoken summons to Gossamer. Wherever death’s hand lingers, Mournwing ensures that Gossamer is aware, ready to oversee the transition from life to decay, and to guide the remnants back into the cycle of rebirth.   Though his task is steeped in sorrow, Mournwing carries out his duty with devotion. He understands that death and decay is not an end, but a transformation, a passage through which all things must pass. To Mournwing, death is not a tragedy, but a sacred part of the cycle of existence, and he honors each life that slips away by ensuring that it does not go unnoticed. His loyalty to Gossamer is absolute, and his connection to the Court of Blight is deep-rooted—an unspoken understanding that where there is life, decay will one day follow.   Mournwing’s presence is rarely welcomed, for his shadow signals the end of something that once thrived. Yet, in the grim stillness of his watch, there is a quiet grace—a solemn acknowledgment that decay is as necessary as growth. He is the watcher, the harbinger, and the guide, ensuring that Gossamer’s hand remains steady as the Court of Blight fulfills its eternal purpose. In the ever-turning wheel of life and death, Mournwing’s wings carry the weight of endings, ensuring that no passing goes unseen and that decay never claims more than its due.
