Mordecai Sanguinor
Chief Bloodletter Mordecai Sanguinor
Mordecai Sanguinor is an Eladrin whose mastery of blood and balance places him at the very heart of the Court of Blight’s philosophy of decay and renewal. As Chief Bloodletter, Mordecai oversees the ancient art of purging disease through the balancing of humors, wielding his knowledge of bodily fluids and natural cycles to restore equilibrium where sickness has taken root. He views the body as a fragile ecosystem, where imbalance breeds corruption, and only through bloodletting and calculated suffering can the poison of disease be drawn out. In the Court of Blight, where decay is both revered and feared, Mordecai’s steady hand ensures that affliction never spreads beyond control.
Mordecai’s appearance is as haunting and refined as the work he performs. His skin, pale with a faint undertone of ash, bears the occasional bloom of sickly veins beneath its surface—a testament to the closeness he shares with disease and corruption. His hair, long and raven-black, flows like ink, often pulled back with minimal effort, allowing no distraction when his hands are at work. His eyes, a deep brown whose whites are tinged with the glow of old blood, seem to pierce through flesh and sinew, as though they can see the taint festering within a body. Tall and unnervingly composed, Mordecai moves with a surgeon’s grace and an executioner’s certainty, his every gesture imbued with the cold precision of one who has long since accepted that pain is the price of balance.
Mordecai believes that the body, like the land, must be pruned and purged to thrive. His techniques are steeped in ancient traditions of humoral theory, wherein disease is seen as a result of imbalance between the four humors—blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. Through meticulous bloodletting, leeching, and other macabre procedures, Mordecai seeks to restore harmony to the afflicted, drawing out the sickness and allowing the body to renew itself through suffering. He often speaks of “the necessity of the blade,” a grim philosophy that views pain not as cruelty, but as a cleansing force that clears the path for rebirth.
Though Mordecai works primarily on living beings, his understanding of humors extends beyond the mortal body. He applies his knowledge to the land itself, tending to the blighted vegetation and diseased growths within the Court of Blight. Where Miasmara Nethra prunes and nurtures, Mordecai bleeds the land when necessary, ensuring that the soil’s balance is maintained through sacrifice. He treats the land with the same detached reverence as he does his patients—knowing that, just as blood nourishes the body, rot and decay nourish the soil.
Mordecai’s devotion to his craft is matched only by his loyalty to the Court of Blight and the Eldest Oak. He views his work as a sacred duty, ensuring that life continues by embracing the inevitability of death. Though his methods inspire fear and unease in those who do not understand them, Mordecai does not waver. He knows that to preserve the balance, one must sometimes draw blood, for in that blood lies the promise of renewal.
