Court of Carrion and Decomposition

The Fey Court of Carrion and Decomposition is a dreary realm embodying the inevitability of decay and the transformative power of rot. It is a place where life and death intermingle, where the cycle of decay is not seen as an end, but as a beginning, a necessary process that leads to renewal. Death is not mourned here, but rather recognized as what is needed to feed life. The court thrives in the shadows, in places where the light struggles to reach, and where the natural order of growth and decay is left undisturbed. Psilofyr is an archfey of the myconid race, also known as the Carrion King for their relation to renewal through decomposition. They are a unique entity not bound to a singular form, but rather existing in many places simultaneously. Their consciousness resides within a singular and extensive fungal root system that expands the entire realm, as well as extending into the mortal plane.   At the heart of this macabre court stands Psilofyr, whose primary manifestation is that of a colossal, venerable mushroom. With a cap mottled in sickly hues and surrounded by tendrils of mycelium that pulse with a ghostly luminescence, Psilofyr exudes an aura of ancient decay and renewal. Though he is immobile in his primary form, his presence is omnipresent through the Great Fungal Root System—a vast, interwoven network that permeates not only the rotting forests of the court but also stretches into far-flung realms of the mortal world.   When the need arises for Psilofyr to communicate or enforce his will, he cultivates new manifestations attached to this sprawling fungal network. Each of these emergent forms, while intrinsically linked to the same ancient consciousness, possesses its own distinct personality, ambitions, and sometimes even conflicting agendas. These varied incarnations of Psilofyr are known to engage in intense debates, and on occasion, their divergent visions lead to open conflicts—a reminder that within the unity of decay there exists a spectrum of thought as varied and unpredictable as the patterns of rot themselves.   The denizens of the Court of Carrion and Decomposition are as diverse as they are grim. Amid the omnipresent decay, scavengers and carrion birds flit through the air and prowl the fungal undergrowth, dutifully removing carcasses before disease can take root. These creatures, both fey and mortal-turned-fey, are revered not only for their role in cleansing the environment but also as vital participants in the cycle of decay and rebirth. Their relentless activity ensures that death is transformed into nourishment, feeding the relentless growth of the Great Fungal Root System and perpetuating the natural cycle that defines the court.   In this somber domain, the process of decomposition is elevated to an art form—a necessary and sacred ritual that underpins the very essence of life. Psilofyr, through his vast fungal network, is ever aware of every spore that drifts into existence, every morsel of decay uncovered, and every transformation that unfolds. The court’s alignment with the Unseelie reflects its embrace of the darker, more unyielding aspects of nature. Here, decay is not a lament but a celebration of nature’s relentless drive to renew itself, a powerful counterpoint to the ephemeral beauty of life that finds its ultimate expression in the transformative power of rot.

Demography and Population

The Court of Carrion is home to a variety of dark and eerie fey who embody the themes of decay, rot, and transformation. These fey thrive in the shadows, often unseen and unnoticed as they carry out the natural processes of death and renewal. Numerous myconid thrive in the realm and serve the court, connected to the fungal networks that spread throughout the realm. Fungus dryads who make their homes in giant mushrooms instead of trees, with pale and mottled skin and hair that looks like mycelium, reside within the realm. Rot trolls, hulking, decaying trolls whose bodies are riddled with fungi and parasites, but whose regeneration keep them alive, serve as the court's enforcers. There are autumn eldarin who make home here within this court, though their numbers are few. Carrion crows and corpse moths take to the air and verminlord, fey lords with an affinity for all manner of vermin, wander the dank tunnels.

Laws

  • Respect the cycle of decay, do not preserve the dead or bring them back.
  • Nurture what springs from rot.
  • Consume only what has lived, only eat food that has once been alive and has begun to decay. Fresh, untouched food is wasteful.
  • No flame without purpose.

What withers feeds the future.
