Alderstump, the Seer and Truthsayer of the Court of Rampant Green, was once a proud and ancient treant. Alderstump stood as a sentinel of the forest, deeply rooted and thriving in service to nature’s primal will. However, fate took a darker turn when a creeping invasion of witch’s hair lichen, known for its invasive growth, began to overtake Alderstump’s form. This lichen choked the life from the treant, ultimately killing it as it wound its pale, thread-like tendrils over every inch of bark.
But death was not the end for Alderstump. The lichen animated the lifeless trunk, filling the empty vessel of the fallen treant with its own will. Now, Alderstump is a spectral and unnerving figure; its bark is now rotting and its once face-like form appears almost skeletal, and the entire form is draped in cascading strands of witch’s hair that sway and tremble like an eerie veil in the slightest breeze. Its hollowed eyes glow with an unnatural green light, and its voice is a rustling, whispering chorus that seems to emerge from the depths of the forest itself, layered with the echoes of lost secrets and half-forgotten truths.
In its role as the Seer and Truthsayer, Alderstump has a unique gift—its lichen-infused essence grants it visions and premonitions, glimpses of hidden fates and secrets embedded in the world’s roots and soil. These revelations are not always clear or linear; they come to Alderstump like fragments of dreams, obscured and distorted by the lichen’s peculiar way of perceiving time and space. Alderstump serves Acacia, the ruler of the Court of Rampant Green, with unwavering loyalty, communicating truths that are often as twisted as the lichen that animates it, but also as inevitable and unyielding as the slow crawl of roots breaking through stone.
