Greenheart Tradition / Ritual in Mithra | World Anvil

Greenheart

Greenheart is a festive day in the North. It celebrates, not so much the love between two people, but more the peace, tranquillity and new life that comes with the end of winter. During this time, many young lovebirds celebrate themselves too. Most people will make an offer to the wyvern of Escotar, while others will spend the day with that special someone.

Customs

Greenheart is, after the Lanu festival, the biggest celebration in the North. It is kind of like the two sides of a coin. The Lanu festival starts of the new year and marks the beginning of winter. And Greenheart marks the official beginning of spring, which starts a little bit later than in most of Mithra. Some people will spend the day with their partner. It is a big tradition to marry or soulbond during sunset. Otherwise, they will most likely watch the sunset or find the warmest spot they can find, down in the south. Some will actually travel for weeks, just to feel the warmth of spring. They will have a picnic or just lay in the grass for hours.
During this holiday, most people will make an offer to the Wyvern of Escotar. The Wyvern has made a huge impact on some of the events that shaped the North. It is also one of the main protectors of nature in the North and has a reputation as a sort of god. When it is finally time, most people will bring an offer to the rock of Meran. This offer will usually entail something of worth like a necklace or a coin, and some meat. legend goes that the wyvern's servant, a faun named Cocomec, comes and takes all of the offers at night. No one has seen the faun yet, but many have tried finding it.

Fried Game and bread

When the sun has fully set behind the horizon, families, and friends gather to celebrate Greenheart. The spirit of Greenheart is to share and love, which they fully do. Even the Knights of Ostron share in this tradition. Every year, they gather, together with the queen, her court, the lords and ladies of the land, and their courts, to hold a big feast. A feast that almost rivals the Luna Festival Feasts. People will hold a great hunt and gather all sorts of food. It is a tradition to have a big cooking pot filled with animal fat above a fire in the middle of the tables. The tables are usually set up around this. Family and friends will come together. The meat will be cut down into a ton of small pieces. Big pots of honey, breadcrumbs, spices, egg yokes, and sometimes other things like fruit, will be stalled out around the frying pan. Participants will take a little net made of steel rope, and fill it with different pieces of game. Usually, venison and boar, which they will dip into egg yokes or honey and then in some of the breadcrumbs or spices. They will put it in the frying pan and take it out to have their own little fried meal. There will be other typical Greenheart-dishes on the table, but the fried game is the spine of the feast. Some places have little variations or other ingredients. The game will usually be consumed with bread. Together with some of the typically snow-elven sauce, this makes for a delicious treat.

Lovers

During greenheart, many lovebirds will travel south to find the warm green nature of spring. Most romantic is considered to fly by owl down to the provinces of Regions of Escotar and South Woscana to have lovely day, doing nothing. I really don't get this tradition. The flower fields in southeast Escotar are one of the most popular destinations for this. Some young lovers will use this day to run away far from home, to a land better and less cold. Most of them return, not long after, having realized that the warmth is nothing for them. Their families welcome them back and everything is well. As you might have guessed, I feel nothing for these traditions. Maybe it is because Cenyis never wanted to run away with me. But at least I have my archives now.

Spotting the white Warethon

The white Warethon, an animal of legends. Find it, and you will be a legend. In the south of Woscana, west of Vernamith, and East of Escotar, every Greenheart people go out to find the white Warethon. This majestic white slim Warethon is an animal of legends. Instead of being in a pack, it roams the forests and hills alone. No one ever finds it, but many try to track it down during Greenheart, since it is said that it is least shy on this special day. Every Greenheart-morning, heaps of trackers try their hand at finding the beast in locations it's supposedly spotted.
Maybe we could travel south during Greenheart. Not to the flower fields, but somewhere far warmer. How about the free cities?

The purple locust lilly is a flower typical for the spring and autumn of the North. During summer and winter, it closes up to conserve energy or to protect itself from the heat. This is why it's the symbol of greenheart. The name might be 'green' heart, but the symbolic color is purple. People will wear purple to show their appreciation to their loved ones, and because it's tradition.
