Bears of Hjemtir

The realm of Hjemtir is home to several species of bear, both ordinary and magical. Most of them are a threat to mortals.   The iron bear, named for its immense strength and dark grey coat, is not the largest of bears but by far the most physically intimidating.   The grey bear, lighter in colour than the iron bear, is one of the smallest bears, and the most easily intimidated. It actively avoids people and lives off fish. It only really gets aggressive towards people if trying to drive them away from its mate or its young. Should it perceive a threat, it is very fast and the fatal blow won't be seen coming.   Gold bears are a magical species, now very rare. Larger than the iron bear and faster than the grey bear, it has a "song" which causes drunkenness in those who hear it. They live underground, preying on humans, avraths and large mammals. They have a golden-brown coat and brilliant orange eyes. They hibernate in the colder months and are only seen outside during the warmer ones.   Mountain bears are named not just because of their preferred habitat, but because of their terrifyingly effective camouflage. Mountain bears are unique among bears in that they have an exoskeleton made up of rough, rock-like plates. Despite its size, when it keeps very still, it can easily be mistaken for a pile of boulders. More intelligent than other bears and with excellent senses, it is very patient and prefers to wait for prey to come nearer rather than move closer. Mountain bears are not picky and will eat anything that ventures into their domain. Travellers through the mountains who stop for a rest in a cave, will often find a mountain bear that heard or smelled them coming waiting inside. Very few make it out again alive.   The red-clawed bear is greatly feared among avraths. It is named not because it has red claws, but because the claws of any of these bears are symbolically red with blood. Its preferred prey is avrath, which it can smell miles away; barring that any bird, barring that any meat. Red-clawed bears are the swiftest of all the bears, can climb trees in seconds, and have been known to stalk individual avraths for days, ready to pounce on them the moment they land, driving their prey to exhaustion until they're either forced to land or fall out of the sky. When one is on an avrath's tail, it is virtually impossible to shake off. While relatively small, the red-clawed's skin is almost impossible to penetrate; the only record of anyone successfully killing--or even maiming--one was during a tussle between a red-clawed bear and a nightstalker wolf (not an improvement). There are more stories of avraths managing to shake off the predator, but it's very difficult and relies very much on the landscape.   The speckled bear is a highly dangerous bear, not because of its strength or aggression, but because it carries a magical contagion that can spread to any mortal sapient.   The winged bear, easy to tell apart from other bears because of its wings, is much smaller than other bears, about the size of a vulture. Despite its size, it is vicious when it attacks, and can easily bring down a deer or a human alone.
