Juro’s Sickness

Transmission & Vectors

It’s obtained through eating infected meat

Causes

It’s argued that the bacteria came from a specific species of demon. It’s named after a specific demon named Juro who made some grossly offensive comments about how he enjoyed spreading the sickness to the surface dwellers. The bacteria lives in the saliva of the demons, and spreads rapidly upon biting someone or a general chunk off meat, living off the blood that comes from meat.

Symptoms

Short term it causes weakness, dizziness, fever, vomiting of blood, and blood leaking from the eyes. Long term wise it causes chronic fatigue, leaking blood from the eyes most of the time, blood clots, excess of blood in the body and epilepsy.

Treatment

Intense potion therapy is required just to survive it. To maintain a somewhat functional state the intense potion therapy must be done regularly.

Prognosis

The condition is highly fatal, with an 80% death rate. There’s no stages to the disease other than the intensity of the symptoms getting worse as long as it goes untreated.

Sequela

Because of this sickness, the affected’s immune system reduces drastically, opening them up to develop other sicknesses.

Hosts & Carriers

Urithar are born carriers of the disease. The bacteria that causes the sickness is actually what they need to live as it’s what gives them blood at all. The only symptom they tend to carry is chronic fatigue and blood leaking from the eyes.

Prevention

Avoid being bitten by the demons and infected who carry the disease, and don’t eat infected meat.

History

Juro was responsible for instigating the initial trio of outbreaks in the region of Northern Symilf, and the eastern area of East Jyalb shortly after the cessation of hostilities in the Human-Ivierae War. Each of these outbreaks was triggered following instances where Juro had bitten various farm animals, leading to widespread panic and concern among the local populace. After Juro was discovered, he was promptly executed for his crimes, though locals were still terrified that more demons would come. They begged Highking Ånøy to ban that particular species of demon, the Urithar, but he refused to ban them, causing mass panic in the local communities. The people of Darʌkys were paranoid about catching the sickness, so they built a wall.   People to this day are still cautious about catching Juro’s Sickness, and so many refuse to eat meat that comes from those two regions. Many even go out of their way to get meat imported from Fzalder. Local butchers and farmers in the affected areas struggle to make a living, often facing severe economic hardship due to the persistent stigma. Some have attempted to rebrand their products or switch to different types of farming, but the shadow of Juro’s Sickness looms large. Restaurants and food markets in neighbouring regions prominently advertise their Fzalder-sourced meat, capitalising on the public's preference for perceived safety (though it hasn’t stopped Darʌkys citizens from thinking meat is inherently poisoned from just entering the area).

Cultural Reception

Mass panic ensued from all around the area, especially to other places that trade with eastern East Jyalb and North Symilf. People tend to be terrified of the victims, and completely hate the urithar even though it was just one demon that wanted to spread the illness. Any urithar who attempts to immigrate are usually immediately ostracised and shunned no matter how apologetic and kind they really are.
