Slow-Time Condition in Mirrarium | World Anvil

Slow-Time

Slow-Time isn't quite a disease, nor a disorder. It is a different way of looking at the progress and march of time, a change in one's perception that occurs when someone lives a very, very long time and spends most of that time as a mentally mature adult. Although most commonly known among Dragons and Dragonborn, other immortal or very long lived beings can also acquire it. Spirits are another common entity that can exhibit a kind of Slow-Time, but as they are not mortal and don't typically integrate with mortals as much as even dragons do, it is a bit different for them.   Slow-Time is perhaps ironically named, because it actually causes one to perceive time as moving more quickly. However, this means that to others it would seem as though you are slower to do things such as make decisions or get around to doing something you have planned.   In essence, when you have lived for thousands of years and can expect, barring accidents, to live thousands more, the meaning of time loses its value to a degree. A decade is a very short span to you - you could nap for a decade and consider it refreshing. In a sense this leads to great patience, and it becomes difficult to hold grudges against any but equally long-lived beings. Why hold a grudge against someone who will be dead by the time you've decided whether you want to paint or wallpaper your lair?

Causes

The ultimate cause of the condition is simply living a very, very long time, especially compared to those around you.

Symptoms

Symptoms include a disinterest in current affairs, a seeming lack of care for shorter-lived creatures, and a general difficulty in understanding expedience or why anything should need to be taken care of quickly.

Treatment

Although Slow-Time is not a disorder, it can become difficult to interact with mortals when your point of view is on such a grand scale. As such, there are mental practices that can actually help and reduce your perception to a more limited, local-temporal frame. The greatest of these is to practice mindfulness - an active effort to focus on the here and now and being present in the moment.

Prognosis

Slow-Time is just another way of looking at the world. The only quality of life issue comes when dealing with shorter-lived species.
