Session 80 - Jan 21, 2021 Report

General Summary

1305 - 1st Moon of Summer (Ruamil) 9th Day

• The party continues to explore down the tunnel they saw the cloaker blood, in the marching order, Ari, Roth, Li, Alethra and Merry.
• The party found an odd cavern with a wide open space but shorter ceilings, more like 10-15 ft, instead of the usual 30 plus feet in the larger rooms.
• The party travels for about 6-7 hours, finding small areas of cloaker blood, the party then finds a split in the tunnel. The left dead ends, the right goes on with a large stain of cloaker blood, and Roth found where a Dark Mantle was eaten, likely by the cloaker.
• The party finds a large caverns, 30 ft tall, 40 by 60 where there is a large mess like there was a battle. As Roth and Ari start to investigate the carnage, assuming that this is what is left of the cloaker.
• Two ropers manage to trap Ari, Roth, Alethra and Merry, then have Piercers drop out of the ceiling onto the tops of their heads. Li is the only one free of the restraining arms.
• Merry and Alethra dimension door out, which Roth teleports away, leaving only Ari still trapped. The Piercers try to attack the party, mainly getting killed or trying to run back up the wall.
• Since Roth is now in the bubble of darkness, the rest of the party must fend off the attacks of the various Roper arms, with Merry and Ari on the ceiling taking bite damage. Merry is able to polymorph the Roper next to her into a turtle, fall from the ceiling and catch it, keeping it a turtle.
• The party then focuses on killing the one that has Ari in its grasp, which she had blinded, which it does and the corpse falls to the group.
• The turtle is then placed in the middle of the cavern, blinded, and with held actions, the Roper is hurt but not dead, and Roth is able to finish it off with an arrow
• Roth and Alethra take 1 roper eye, the pieces of 2 tentacles, and pull out 4 tentacles to full range, 50 ft, and add them to the bag of colding.
• Since the party is still a ways out, Roth casts sending to Magmabrew, who they let know they will return the next evening.
• Roth sends Olly to scout, leaving all of her gear with Roth, and after about an hour of Olly going through additional caverns, she finds a big cavern with many stalactites and stalagmites, and Olly does not want to keep flying.
• After Olly returns, Alethra and Roth work on the map and making notes on the creatures they fought and killed, as no one knew what they were called and Merry calls them "Bitty Trapping Things".
• Merry casts the dome, and Ari pulls a boar and a goat, and the party takes watch. Alethra swears she sees a stalactite move, and is very scared until Merry tells her it cannot get through the dome.

1305 - 1st Moon of Summer (Ruanae) 10th Day

• The party backtracks through the tunnel, with Roth leading and Olly scouting ahead. Olly then notices the tunnel went from normal dark to magical dark. She is confused and gets poofed back to Roth.
• The party then has to fight with several Dark Mantles and they find one which seems to be able to cast darkness. Roth then inspects all the bodies and finds on with a darker band around its head, and he puts that in the bag of holding.
• The party finds Magmabrew in the same cavern they left her in. Roth and Alethra get briefed on the trap with the moving walls and how it seems to work and how it can be turned on/off. Magmabrew has ideas about how to make it more effective against non-dwarf creatures that may get in from the natural caverns. There is a discussion on a similar trap being installed in the house, and possible poisonous mushroom golem guardians (Merry got fixated).
• The party try to explain the Roper to Magmabrew, who also has no idea what it is, and promises that she will offer hazard pay, as soon as she know what they fought. The decision is made to close off the tunnel a little ways in at a pinch in the tunnel. The miners can then open it up later if they need to search for more ore. Alethra uses two shatter spells to close off that area, and Magmabrew is happy that the monster are now all on the other side.
• Magmabrew mentions that she will cast the mansion and then tomorrow they will go await the mine certification team.
• Magmabrew is delighted to have such a wonderfully done map of both the mines and beyond.
