Session 121 - October 20, 2022 Report
General Summary
1306 - 1st Moon of Spring - Renlar (23th Day)
- Roth hears more trees and he tells the rest of the party about the incoming creatures. During Beartrum's hunt in the remains of the shambling mound, he gets Ari, who takes 1 HP and returns to her self.
- Two more shambling mounds start down the cave towards the party. Roth shoots the tree, Merry casts a tiny meteor at the tree, Ari cast chromatic orb, both Alethra and Olly cast fireball, then Roth and Ari shoot it again and the 1st one goes down. The 2nd one takes more arrows, toll the dead from Alethra and more meteors from Merry, and that tree goes down.
- The group pushes through the remains and heads down the cave, seeing a bridge across a pool of lava to a tunnel on the other side. There is a relief of a flame/fire on the floor at the first part of the bridge. As Beartrum goes into the space, the fire sigil begins to glow slowly, getting slightly more red and emitting a low light. Ari now casts Detect Magic and has it up, the sigil is magical. The rest of the party goes to view the room, and they see the lava moving around. Alethra then casts Magic Missile at the sigil, which seemed to absorb the spells energy. She is very surprised and confused at this. She then sees two large magma creatures rise out of the lava, and she greets them in primordial. The creatures do not respond or seem to hear her. Roth then moves into the room with the control of elemental badge that he picked up in the ruby mines on Brell Island. No response was given by the lava creatures. Ari then uses the wand on the lava creatures, and realizes that they are constructs, and likely unable to speak or communicate.
- After reviewing the sigil, Alethra realizes that this is a place at specializes in fire magic, so they should use fire magic on the sigil. Merry is happy to use one of her meteors to hit at the sigil. After the small ball of fire magic hits the sigil the lava creatures start to disappear back into the lava, and the sigil is no longer glowing. Olly tries to race Roth across the bridge, but ends up in pet space. The entire party then crosses the bridge with no issues and starts down the long dark tunnel. It is a perfect 10 ft square and all the sides are very smooth and perfect, clearly made with magic.
- After a 15 min walk, the group sees a light ahead, Roth with a 38 sees a fountain in the middle of a chamber with light sources on either side of it. As the group approaches the large room, it is in hexagon shape, with 5 other tunnels visible. The floor of this main room is made of marble hexagon tiles, which the party soon finds out are heated to be warm to the feet. In the middle of the room, there is a large marble fountain (water), with the decoration on each level fire (top level), vines (middle level), waves (lowest/pool level). On either side are two large columns with bonfires set to permanently be burning. While not furnished, the room is very comfortable. There are labels above 5 of the 6 doors in elvish, "Entrance" above the one the party just came down, the left around "Food", "Experiment", door with no sign, "Laboratory", and "Rest".
- Beartrum goes full tummy down on the heated floor, and Merry and Olly join him to enjoy the new druid invention. Ari determines the floor is not magical.
- Alethra and Roth go to explore the "Food" tunnel. There is a short tunnel down into a mostly natural looking cavern full of fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers. The plants are all set up in areas, with a mini sun in the ceiling giving off light, there is a small cover and mechanism which seems to be moving across the rock to create a night/day cycle. Roth casts identify on the "sun" which is a rock with the daylight spell on it permanently. Althera goes around the perimeter of the cave, confirming there is only the one entrance, and is impressed with the variety of the plants, and sees a few bees as well. There seems to be no signs of tending or food being eaten recently.
- Ari goes down the "Rest" tunnel, seeing a round path that leads off in both directions. There is a low light from the left, where a large hot springs/bath has some lights left on. It is wonderful and Ari adds a similar version with a slide, bubble bath, and diving board to her mansion for later. She then explores the rest of the tunnel, finding 6 small central living rooms, and off each living room are 4 or 6 small bedroom areas. This is the living quarters and where the residents went to rest and sleep.
- After all parties regroup, Olly gets some samples of the food growing in the area, with her bag of smuggling now holding Apples, Pears, Oranges, Limes, Tomatoes, Peppers, Blackberries, Corn, and a few random flowers.
- The next door to be explored is the "Laboratory" door. There is a medium sized natural looking cave with a few small lava pools in the floor, likely for experimenting on, and several desks around the room. There are 3 books left on shelves that the party find, one on heating water (and making tea) with lava, one on heating floors with lava, and one on blacksmithing with lava. Alethra puts all the books into her bag.
- Beatrum is now asking for dinner, and the whole group goes to look at the water pools in the "Rest" area, and Ari casts her Magical Mansion with the new and improved hot springs inside. Olly, Beartrum, Roth, and Ari take dinner in this new magical space with Alethra and Merry enjoy a nice quiet dinner reading and resting in the study. Ari then has margaritas made with the limes.
- Long rest, Level 14
- Alethra uses the heating water manual and makes a very yummy cup of tea with the fancy copper tea kettle that the group found awhile ago. Alethra enjoys her tea, sharing a little bit with Ari and Olly, who Alethra distracts while Roth casts the bond, and Olly tells Alethra about the bubble bath last night.
- The groups heads out to explore the last names tunnel, "Experiments". Upon going down the tunnel, there are 5 additional tunnels off this in a small circular area. The 1st tunnel to the left has the door blocked by what looks a natural rock slide.
- The other tunnels are explored, 1st the central tunnel. This room has perches on the wall and two desk, upon each which rests a pair of opera looking glasses, which have an owl motif. These Owlpera Glasses, Ari and Roth each take 1 set, Roth casting identify, these are glasses of Through Sight, with the glasses seeing through the attached and corresponding construct. Roth is able to use the glasses to vaguely know where the owl that sees through Ari's glasses is with head twisting. Alethra finds some chalk residue on the floor, but it does not seem like the kind needed in magical teleportation.
- Group then explores central right tunnel, which has a large desk under a small wooden door, which holds many forms of high heat mushrooms. Alethra gets 4 of each, so 20 total, half going into the bag of cold-ing and half into Alethras bag. Ari finds a blank piece of paper and uses pencil in find some notes on the experiment (no switches or levers found to change temperature).
- The next tunnel is far right tunnel, there are 4 desks and 2 large cages/atriums attached to the wall. There seems to be a small fire lizard in one of the cages. Ari plays with it a bit, and it seems quite playful and fun, but not intelligent enough to converse with. There is 1 page of notes found, and the party read that the lizard is a creature from the fire plane, and they have finally figured out how to keep it from lighting everything in its enclosure on fire. Alethra does not think they need food, and Ari wants to keep it as a pet, but the debate will continue after the entire city has been explored.
- Last is the center left room. This is slightly large, with 8 large desks, 4 on each side. There are limited documents and information in this space, but what can be found relates to the "Food" cave, notes on the lighting, fertilizers, pollination, etc.
- The group then goes to the central area of the "Experiment" wing, trying to figure out if it is worth the effort to open the rock slide area and see what is behind the last area.
