The Hidden Lair
Located in the hills that overlook the town, there is an entrance to a cave that most of the locals will never mention or go near.
Those that venture inside, rarely return, the locals call it the Hidden Lair, the reason for the name has been lost to time and no one is eager to find out what's hidden there.
During the long nights spent in the taverns in the town, there is a chance that one of the locals after having been supplied with plenty of ale, will tell newcomers about the Hidden Lair, the stories always start the same way, it either a traveller, treasure hunter or young reckless adult that wanders too far into the hills, thinking they will be the ones to reveal the hidden truth behind the Lair.
The ones that return say that the air around the entrance feels wrong, like it's too cold, too still, and even the wind that will howl through the hills will fall silent near the entrance. Locals whisper that once you have stepped inside the lair, it dont feel like a cave anymore, the darkness seems to swallow the light from the torch and clings to the skin.
Those that make it out, are shaken and pale, they will talk about strange markings etched into the stone symbols that glow in the dark and the amount of bones scattered across the floor.
There are plenty of stories going around, talking about what's inside the Cave, some theories go that it's the lair for some of the ancient and noble creatures that have not been seen alive for more than 1200 years, the dragons. Other theories are that the cave is home to some of the things that appeared during the collapse of the Ancient Empire, beats with horns and fangs.
I kind of love that people always tell travellers about it, kind of like they're daring them to go there. Scary. I wonder what the truth is.
