Nanocomposites

Nanocomposites are a type of material made from nanoscopic-sized (less than 100 nanometres) components. In general discussion the term 'nanocomposites' typically refers to metal composites derived from carbon nanotubes, which are the most common type of nanocomposite in everyday use. Other types of nanocomposites, such as hydrogels and polymer-nanotubes are also common, but less well known. Early nanocomposites were carbon nanotubes combined with steel, tungsten-tantalum, or titanium alloys, while more modern nanocomposites instead utilise plasteel and durasteel. Nanocomposites are a cheap and effective way of boosting the strength and resilience of a material, and as such were the basis for most early FTL spacecraft armour. Many early megastructures, such as space elevators, also utilised nanocomposites in their construction.
