Titanium Alloys

Titanium alloys are a material made from a combination of titanium and other elements. Although titanium is durable and resilient by itself, the addition of other elements like aluminium, niobium and vanadium further enhances the tensile strength of the material. Although steel and aluminium were, historically, far cheaper than titanium to produce, the development of asteroid mining and enhanced metallurgy processes drastically reduced the cost of mass-manufacturing titanium alloys. Early FTL-capable spacecraft were typically made from a titanium alloy hull protected by nanocomposite armour, but the all-alloy hull design has fallen out of favour with further advancements in materials science. Titanium alloys are still commonly used for the frames and less-critical areas of ships, as well as hand tools, engines, personal vehicles, construction, and medical purposes.
