Maweer

The Maweer are a species of sapient bipedal plantoids that originated on the tropical (now gaia) world of the Garden. Standing at approximately two metres tall, Maweer are identifiable by their epidermis that resembles a tree's bark, ranging in colour from light red to brown to ashen. The homeworld of the Garden was, according to Maweer legend, initially a barren world transformed into a lush floral paradise through their careful tending and nuturing. Although this legend is disputed by scholars, it remains that Maweer have an instinctual capability for both farming and caring for their environment.

Maweer are generally described by other species as leading slower, calmer lives. Many Maweer agree with this assessment, as they prize their idyllic agrarian lifestyles and lack of social conflict. Some xenologists believe this is a result of their long lifespans and slow birth rates, but this is disputed. Information on Maweer biology and sociology is relatively hard to obtain, due to their insular nature and strict information controls with the outside galaxy. Most Maweer prefer to live in small, isolated communities, and as such, urban areas are very limited in size.

In the late 23rd century CE, the Maweer embarked upon a major genetic modification project to grant themselves photosynthetic abilities. This project was successful, and by 2288 CE almost all Maweer had been augmented with this inheritable trait. Today, all Maweer are capable of partially subsisting on radiant energy (sunlight) to supplement their traditional organic diet.
