Maweer

The Maweer are a species of sapient bipedal plantoids that originated on the tropical (now gaia) world of The Garden. The Maweer are known throughout the galaxy for their extreme care for the environment, far more than even other environmentalist species. They have managed to avoid most urbanisation and industrialisation, instead developing large-scale agriculture while protecting their environment. Their long lifespans and slow reproduction rate mean that the Maweer have developed at a slower pace than other species, but they consider this slower technological and economic development an acceptable tradeoff for their environmental caretaking.

According to Maweer legend, they originated when their homeworld was empty and barren. As they grew and developed intelligence, their stewardship of the environment transformed their planet from a wasteland into a paradise that they called The Garden.

The majority of Maweer believe strongly in pacifist principles, refusing to engage in violence unless in defence of themselves or their environment. They also tend to be fairly xenophobic, believing that other species would upset the delicate balance of their carefully maintained ecosystems. As such, Maweer culture tends to be fairly insular, and outsiders are rarely permitted entry to their worlds. Most Maweer live in small communities within the forests of their worlds, engaging in agriculture and environmental stewardship.

The practice of mining is considered a necessary evil by the Maweer, as are the factories that produce their starships. Although they would prefer to live in harmony on their world with nature, they understand that the galaxy can be a hostile place, and wish to protect themselves and their carefully maintained worlds.

Very nice, I love the clever and creative interpretation of a 'useful plant'!
