Ember wielder

...And we watched in awe as Falth stood before us, raking his own shoulder to draw blood. Suddenly, his eyes flared up with ghostly light, and the blood... The blood coalesced into an opal mist before him. Everyone who saw this stopped fighting. The mist wrapped around his form, and within a moment, he was gone. It was almost like he disappeared, or never been there in the first place, as only the fog remained where he once stood before. For a brief moment, I thought he was dead.   A nervous heartbeat later, he re-appeared right behind a confused Air dragon and sliced his throat open with his claws with unnatural speed. I'll never forget the look of disbelief on the dying warrior's face...
— Diary of an unknown Night Hawk Gryphon.
Ember wielders are blood mages who have fused their Dream with a Dream of a passed spirit in the Dreamscape using a shard of Ember - an alien artifact that fell from the skies and scattered in shards all over the lands and seas of The Continent. This dramatic ritual is shrouded in secrets that is so far only known to Falth, the First Ember wielder and a few of his close collaborators. The bodies of Ember wielders are supposedly stuck half-way between life and death, the plane of Existence and plane of Dreamscape. Their eyes brighten to an unnatural green-blue glow whenever they use their newfound abilites, however, it is currently unknown if their condition yields any side effects.   Because of the nature of their existence, their bodies become more fragile and susceptible to injuries, especially as they manipulate the world with their abilities, what they lack in physical prowess they gain back in their ability to influence their enemies' mind to confuse, injure, frighten them at a long distance. Subsequently, some are known to be able to boost their allies physical and mental prowess or instantly mend wounds that would otherwise be lethal. The stronger they manipulate the world around them, the more taxing it is on their health and stamina. In fact, a case where an overeager Ember wielder died of exhaustion has been recorded by the Air Clawstoppers.
The state of Ember Wielder is not related to blood or death. Ever since my mother died, I have seen her in my Dreams. Each day I slept, she was there. Each night I Dreamglided, she followed me. Always beside me, her Dream doesn't wander, it doesn't join Weirds nor seeks items of worth to be Artificed within. It is only after I have spoken with others that I came up with this theory.   As long as someone Dreams about us, Ember can give us power. And the only way someone would be capable of Dreaming about us for the rest of our lives, is for them to die. This is the only way I can explain the fact that Maara was able to conjure the Flow - yet I wasn't there to witness it. I was asleep, Dreaming about her.
—  Falth The First Ember Wielder. Snippet from personal etched memoires.

Transmission & Vectors

Ember is the only possible material in Midrast Wain that could enable one to become an Ember Wielder.   Yet even with Ember in possession, no individual cannot properly merge with Ember alone - as Ember is present in both Dreamscape and Physical realm. The only way that has been discovered thus far, is for the Dream of a dying individual to tether the Ember to its wielder, thus partially merging their own Dream to the new Ember Wielder when their life collapses on the brink of death.   Individual who sacrifices their own life and merges their Dream with the newly born Ember Wielder is called Catalyst. Catalysts must be willing to perform this sacrifice and generally tend to be loyal soldiers, family members, close friends or lovers of the one they want to imbue with the power of Ember.   Death of Catalysts may be caused by any means, even outside of future Ember Wielder's control, such as murder attempt, mortal wound on a battlefield, or terminal illness.

Causes

Upon successful merging of the Ember with Ember Wielder thanks to Catalyst's assistance, the Ember disappears from physical plane of existance. This process is called Ascension.   Ascension can occur twice, as far as has been recorded, with first time it gives the Ember Wielder a very limited range of powers. The second Ascension greatly enhances the range of skills Ember Wielder possesses but requires three shards of Ember rather than a single one.   The only living being that has so far Ascended twice is Falth, The First Ember Wielder. Secondary Ascension doesn't require a Catalyst.   It is unknown whether an individual can Ascend even further.

Symptoms

Individuals experiencing the first Ascension are not visibly different from normal beings, only an individual trained or sensitive to sense Dreams can feel that something is odd. As if the Ember Wielder in question possesses two separate Dreams.   Ember Wielder not only is given great supernatural abilities, but the power that fuels them comes at the cost of bringing him/her closer to death. The damage sustained is temporary and oftentimes can be healed simply by resting. If one pushes their Ember Wielding abilities too far, they will fall unconscious and may require medical attention.   Ember Wielders that ascended once will have their eyes glow with fog-like blue-green substance whenever they channel the powers of Ember. Ember Wielders that ascended twice have their eyes glow permanently, even when they aren't using any abilities.

Treatment

It is currently unknown if and how can the effects of Ember be reverted.   Upon death of the Ember Wielder, all shards of Ember they accepted from their Catalyst materialize on their body.

Prognosis

Individuals who undergo the process experience a distinct change of personality to a smaller or greater degree. It is assumed that the fusing of a Dreams with Catalyst has something to do with this. The nature and scope of powers obtained is wholly dependant on the number of shards of Ember one possesses, as well as the assisting Dream in question.

Cultural Reception

The individuals affected by the Ember are at best regarded with awe, but at worst with disdain, mistrust or even facing persecution. Since Ember wielders have never existed in Midrast Wain until the Ember shattered in the skies a few weeks ago, extremely few are even familiar with them.
