Rudania

In the northern heartlands, protected by mountain ranges from the north, east and west, and with the Sea of Ancients to the south, lies the kingdom of Rudania. A vast, rugged but fertile country, mostly populated by humans, however elves, halflings and the occasional dwarf are not an uncommon sight as they trade, and sometimes even settle within human communities. Throughout history, Rudania has seen its share of conflict. Although the counts and dukes all owe their loyalty to the King of Rudania, a descendant of a noble bloodline that has ruled since Rudania's foundation, they don’t generally see eye to eye. While the bickering lords often call to arms under the pretense of lost honor, or to uphold some code of chivalry, they usually fight their petty wars over minor grievances. Nevertheless, when the king calls, all must answer. And so, in times of need, the lords will temporarily put aside their differences to face a common enemy.

Structure

Rudania is in essence a monarchy, headed by a king who is succeeded by his oldest living son. Matters of the state are handled by the Council of Nobles; the king's most trusted advisors, hand-picked from the ranks of the country's nobility. To be selected to serve on this council is considered a great honor that most members of even the most prestigious and influential houses dare only dream of. The country is split up into several provinces, with loosely defined borders surrounding the area around larger cities and fortifications. While most cities and towns are governed by the heads of noble families who are vassals to the king, fertile farmland, bountiful forests and places rich in natural resources are often fought over by local lords.

Culture

While the people of Rudania are diverse in their origins and beliefs, the overall culture can be described as feudalistic. Most of the common folk work for some estate owner or another and have few possessions of their own. The profession of most trades are strictly regulated by guilds and only the most skilled and well connected people would ever be able to afford the luxury of owning their own property. Let alone inside the walls of a city.
