Potion Crafting Rules
Potion Crafting
Potions crafting in Midasfjall works differently to how it is explained in official WOC rulebooks. Firstly, you only need to take two hours to brew any potion, meaning that one potion of any rarity can be made during the course of a long rest. To brew a potion, you must have the main ingredient of that potion at hand or be within a city or large town where it would be possible to procure the ingredient required for the potion you are attempting to make. Next, if you have the main ingredient of the potion you are attempting to make at hand, you must pay half of its crafting cost - which is determined by the rarity level of the potion (see crafting table below) - for the remaining materials. If you dont have the main ingredient at hand but are within a city or large town, you may pay full price to brew the potion instead. The final step is to make a tool check using either Alchemists tools or a Herbalism kit. The DC of the check depends on the rarity of the potion you are trying to make (see crafting table below). You may choose to use either Intelligence or Wisdom for the check, but you must have proficiency or expertise with one of the aforementioned tools. Additional buffs may be applied to these checks but only if the buff has a duration that lasts over the two hours required to brew the potion. Characters may help each other with the brewing process but only if they have proficiency with the required tools and must both be occupied with the task for the full two hours.Potion Crafting Table

Potion Crafting - Complications/Inspirations
When making a potion crafting check, there are degress of success and failure which grant additional boons or can see your character injure themselves. A complication or an inspiration happens when a character rolls way above or way belowthe DC of a potion crafting check. See the table below for possible results.Roll Above or Below DC | Outcome |
---|---|
Nat 20 | Crafting succeeds. Main ingredient expended. You may choose to either pay another half of the gold cost to create a second potion of the same type as part of the same brewing process, or you may retain three quarters of the original gold cost. |
+5 or more above DC | Crafting succeeds. Main ingredient expended. Retain half of the gold used for crafting cost. |
-1 to -4 below the DC | Crafting fails. Main ingredient expended. Retain half of the gold used for the crafting cost. |
-5 or lower below DC | Crafting fails. Main ingredient expended. Lose all of the gold used for the crafting cost. |
Nat 1 | Crafting fails. Main ingredient expended. Mishap occurs. |
Main Ingredients
Each potion has a unique main ingredient that can be scavenged for during travel. The main ingredient of a potion can be used to half the crafting cost required to brew a potion and each ingredient can only be used to make one potion, after which it is consumed as part of the process. Main ingredients are mostly herbs which can be scavenged but certain potions may call for ingredients that can be harvested from monsters. If you do not know what the main ingredient of a potion you would like to craft is, you can research the potion to learn about the ingredient. To research a specific ppotion's main ingredient, you must have access to a library, or another equivalent store of knowledge, and must spend a day of downtime to complete the research. Upon completion of the research, you must then make a Nature check with a DC that depends on the rarity of the potion you are researching to complete the research (see Locate Ingredients table below). If you have proficiency with the Herbalism Kit or Alchemists supplies, you can make the check using these tools and may use either Wisdom or Intelligence to do so. Upon a successful check, you learn what the main ingredient is, the habitats it can be found in and any other information regarding the consequences of failing to harvest the ingredient sucessfully.
