Shuri Balhan

Shuri Balhan is the former Fuhal of the town of Kanol, known best for her active role in feeding and housing the poor in her community. Though a skilled healer and spiritual counselor, her true gifts have always been in the physical care and support of her community. She ran a kind of soup kitchen out of her home and advocated for communal homes to get rid of the growing homeless problem in Kanol.
She had twenty-four biological children and adopted a dozen more over the years, including Algar Harte. Her only surviving children are Jaris Voltaire, James Voltaire, Hannah Balhan, Maroi Balhan, and Abel Balhan. Her only surviving adopted child is Algar Harte. Shuri has one surviving sister, Gerda Balhan, who she rarely sees.
She is currently bedridden with a terminal illness known as malhei or the Fading Disease.

History

Ounai Voltaire was rarely around for the latter half of their marriage, as he aimed to join Glyssian business ventures. He is the first of his bloodline family to have a last name, which he chose after the historic French writer. This last name has divided their children into "Microshan" and "Glyssian" camps.
Shuri, though she loved her husband, went along fine without him. Her life and her work centered around her children and her community, so when he passed she did not take long to mourn him.

History

After Algar's biological mother abandoned him, Shuri stepped in to adopt and care for Algar. He feels that he owes her a debt that can never be repaid and has done everything in his power to offer her comfort, support,  and medical aid she would not otherwise be able to get in Microsha.

History

Jaris, as firstborn, has always had a close relationship to his parents. His relationship quickly turned into a kind of co-parenting role in order for Shuri to attend to her Fuhal duties as well as Ounai to pursue his career on the surface.
Though Jaris loves his mother and Shuri loves her son, they rarely see each other due to his fraught relationships with his other siblings.
