Ara'i

The Ara'i (ah-rah-ee) are a religious organization of Arbitors. They act as intermediaries between the Kle'ara and the rest of the Arbitor population, though Arbitors living in E'nul are able to speak with the Kle'ara personally. Often seen as zealots, the Ara'i are devout believers in the sort-of divine right of the Kle'ara to rule. Additionally, they are keepers of the voices of the Kle'ara, able to hear the eleven voices of the collective even when they "mute" themselves to discuss privately. Each Ara'i is sworn to secrecy, though they have been known to interfere on behalf of one or more members of the Kle'ara.   They are few in number and typically choose a "plain" look. Most notably, they choose to shift into earthen tones (brown mostly) and wear white. Some Ara'i even forgo clothing, choosing instead to paint their bodies with white symbols and decorations. Mostly, Ara'i are humble or at least feign it well enough to keep out of trouble.   Just as fuhal are spiritual counselors and healers to humans, so are Ara'i to Arbitors. The training from Apprentice to Ara'i is a long one, often taking hundreds of years in order to qualify for examinations. This is more to do with the medical training than the spiritual one, as healing shapeshifters is much more difficult than healing other plants and animals in the wider world.

Notable Holders

The most notable Ara'i is an Arbitor named Vithraya, who speaks directly to the Kle'ara with White Eyes. Though not in an official capacity, the White-Eyed Kle'ara is assumed to be the leader of the collective. Most Ara'i are not privy to White Eyes's thoughts, but Vithraya earned this privilege. They hold their neutrality in highest regard, never interfering on behalf of a member of the Kle'ara. Thus, Vithraya earned White Eyes's favor and confidence.   As a human, Vithraya has historically chosen a female form, though continues to use the gender-neutral pronoun 'they'. They
