Prolish

Prolish, sometimes known as Dire Monkeys are a domesticated species of water monkey on the island of Hapitri. Due to the lack of solid road on Hapitri, they function as pack animals across the continent.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Prolish stand at 15 feet tall. They have 4 arms and 2 legs, each of which has an opposable thumb. It's fur is black. It's mouth is large enough to eat a coconut.

Genetics and Reproduction

In the spring, female Prolish put out any extra fruit that they save over the winter. The scent of fruit attracts male Prolish to the site, who vie for the right to mate. During that period, the male joins the pack of the female until the children reaches maturity. Prolish give birth in pairs of two.

Growth Rate & Stages

Prolish grow at a fairly slow rate. After birth, they spend 15 years reaching maturity. After that, they spend the next 20 years gathering food for their pack until they 'retire' to be taken care of by the rest of their pack in exchange for a leader capable of settling inner and intra pack disputes.

Ecology and Habitats

Prolish live in the jungles of Hapitri, where they thrive in the canopy. Rarely making their way to the ground, they spend most of their life 40 feet above the ground.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Prolish eat fruit and nuts in the tree canopy that they use their high bite force to crack into.

Biological Cycle

In the spring, male prolish leave their pack to find a mate. If they don't mate by summer, they return to their pack. Throughout the summer and fall, unmated females stockpile fruit to help them in the next season with assistance from the rest of the pack. In the winter, they place all their fruit in a tree to ferment for the season. Eventually, when spring arrives, female prolish take all of the fermented fruit out of the tree to repel predators with the stench while attracting a possible mate.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Prolish keep in family units of four or 5 to make a pack. Each family has an elder that represents it, and the pack has a designated alpha that represents it to other units.

Domestication

Prolish packs can be tamed as a unit. By introducing yourself to the pack, domesticators can place themselves within the family unit.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Prolish are used as a transport system on Hapitri. Some people also use them to gather the fruit at the canopy of the jungle.
