The Freelands

In the center of Merkia lies the untamed region of The Freelands. While it is considered by many to be exceptionally dangerous due to the high population of monstrous creatures The Freelands also offers hope to those who wish to escape the tyrannical rule of the other regions and live a truly independent life. This has led to The Freelands being one of the few truly multicultural regions in Merkia, as individuals of all races leave their homelands in search of a new beginning. The only major population center of The Freelands is the City of Treba, found on the shores of Iska's Tear but many small towns and villages can be found throughout the region. As there are no true rulers in The Freelands, there is no central authority and bandit gangs are a common occurrence and it falls to individual villages to protect themselves however they can. While this creates strong bonds between members of these communities it leads to many being suspicious if not outwardly hostile to outsiders.

Geography

The Freelands is a temperate region that can be divided into three main geographical areas, The Blackridge Mountains in the northeast, The Doncalan Forest that dominates the south of the region and the temperate grasslands that cover the rest of The Freelands. The only major body of fresh water in The Freelands is the lake Iska's Tear which is fed by the Blackridge River.

Fauna & Flora

The Freelands are notorious for its dangerous wildlife and many unique monsters can be found in the area. Some common animals found throughout the region include Bears, Boars, Blood Hawks, Deer, Elk, Eagles, Goats, Hyenas, Leopards, Snakes and Stirges. Many of these animals can grow to exceptional sizes given the right conditions.

Natural Resources

Overall compared to the other regions of Merkia The Freelands natural resources are fairly scarce. This is due mostly to the dangers involved with gathering them and for this reason, few settlements expand beyond their means, favoring security instead.
