Siegeball

"When you're in that arena and you hear the crowds chanting your names, there is nothing more incredible. This is our city and here we are unstoppable."
— Antoni Rieger, Griffins Lead Striker

History

Siegeball began as a small game played in local villages. Originally there were few established rules but as the game grew in popularity the three rules and positions were created and The Siegeball League was founded between several villages and towns which saw the sport boomed with people flocking from all over The Freelands to see the top teams compete. Now an annual tournament is held in The City of Kerma where the eight most successful teams compete for the siegeball championship. The current champions are The Griffins.

Execution

Siegeball is a widely-played sport played between two teams of five players in a walled rectangular arena. Normally, this arena is 140 feet long by 45 feet wide. Each team has a tower, a 5-foot diameter pillar made of wood or loose stone, to defend from the other team. There is a single ball which can be used to knock down the towers. The game begins with a tip-off in the center of the arena. A player from each team makes an attack against the ball. The other players begin in their half of the arena. A team loses when their tower falls.

Components and tools

Central to the game of siegeball is the ball, an especially dense sphere of enchanted wrapped leather that is pursued by the players. The ball is astoundingly heavy, and players move it by attacking it. Three of the players are given bats, while a fourth player is given a more powerful weapon, such as a warhammer.

Participants

There are three key positions in siegeball. Three of the players are known as strikers. They are equipped with bats and their role is to strike the ball. The second position is the defender. The defender is equipped with a warhammer and their role is to defend the tower. They must remain in their teams half. The third position in the caster who is allowed to cast nondamaging cantrips during the game. If a caster is not available they will be replaced by a fourth striker

Observance

In the siegeball league, there are three concrete rules. Attacking the opponent's tower directly, attacking players, and casting powerful magic are all considered cheating. However, other behaviors, like shoving opposing players or kicking dirt into their eyes, is tolerated and sometimes even encouraged.
