The Iron Crown

The Iron Crown is the title given to the current King/Queen of the Kingdom of Brennis. The title is officially only for the inheritor of the throne, and not someone who is joined to the family by marriage.   Lionel Brennis, despite being the founder of Brennis, never held the title himself. He had never been crowned King of Brennis, but instead created the title for his son, King Rain Brennis I shortly after his birth. Lionel claimed that Brennis needed a king that would act and react to the new world and age before the people of Orisia, and not rely on traditions and grudges of the past.   As the boy king grew older and shaped the Kingdom with the aid of his court and his father, he drafted the code of conduct for the title. Officially the title is given to the first born child of the original King or Queen, breaking away from the more traditional male hereditary monarchy that Acaron and Kyros followed.   The title has currently only been held by two people, King Rain Brennis, and his daughter, the recently crowned Queen Victoria Brennis .

The title is appointed by three people in a ceremony of the court, usually consisting of a knight appointed by the previous King/Queen, the eldest member of the family, and the primary advisor to the inheritor.

  • Rule over all of The Kingdom of Brennis
  • Act in accordance to the good of the people of the Kingdom and the nation above all else

  • Give audience to people each day when possible

Accoutrements & Equipment

As requested by Lionel Brennis, the Crown of Brennis is cast from iron rather than gold or silver, to be an object of power, not of opulence. Being the ruler of Brennis is not a privilege, but a burden that the ruler must carry for the good of their people.

History

The title was created during the time when Lionel Brennis oversaw the building of Brennis. While he did not claim or control any of the land officially, he was known well throughout the new world, either from personal contact, or through messengers. He had seen the pain and suffering that the rulers of Acaron , Kyros , and Berava had all caused in their greed for wealth and power, as well as the dangers that the zealots of the Order had brought about. He saw the idea of a ruler as something someone shouldn't wish to be, but it was needed. That it was a responsibility to people, and that a leader was bound to protect and care for his people above all else. However he could see that people had been under the rule of one king or another for so long, and had developed nationalistic bonds to their rulers, even if they had been mistreated by them their entire lives.   The survivors of the Colossus were tired and beaten, and already they began to divide among themselves and ancient grudges were reforming in this new world from the world they had left behind. Lionel Brennis spent weeks drafting up a code of honor that the leader of Brennis would have to follow and uphold for his people.   Once his son was born, narrowly avoiding the assassination attempt that had claimed his wife, he knew that his son would have to bear the title of leader when he grew older, and needed to make the title official and have weight behind it. As his newborn slept in the cradle next to him, Lionel created the title of The Iron Crown. A title, much like the metal, heavy and intended bear the weight of the world.   When Rain was 12 years old, Lionel had the official crowning ceremony publicly declaring Rain the first King and Ruler of the now Kingdom of Brennis. As King Rain got older, he oversaw the drafting of the Banner of Burdon, a document that held the ruler of Brennis and holder of the Iron Crown to their duties to the kingdom. After working on it for nearly three years, the Banner of Burdon was completed and made public to the people of Brennis, showing them that their ruler was bound to the good of them.

Cultural Significance

To the people of Brennis the title is quite important. It signifies that their ruler acts in terms that are good for them, even if they made not agree with them in the moment. Most people within the nation respect and honor the owner of the title.   To outsiders of Brennis the title may not seem that much different from a normal King or Queen, it's only after learning the history of Brennis and the world before it that it makes much more sense.   To other ruling families, those from Acaron, Kyros, and Berava for example, they may regard the owner of the title as mad or foolish for not focusing more on themselves.
