Ophio anaesthetic

Many citizens of Akorros are being sucked into the clutches of the Ophio trance, but recently a new use for the spores has been found by some Maidel Silvertongue and Iorwen Glorfindle, healers in the Temple of Khoronus.

Human surgery

They have discovered that if the spores are finely ground, then mixed with powdered silver, ground Akesoli starroot and tincture of myrrh, when the resulting mixture is added to Cirera spirit it gives off a vapour. If this vapour is collected, it can be later used during surgery to completely anaesthetise the patient, reducing the trauma and lowering their metabolism so that the surgeon can perform delicate operations and healing which would be impossible if the patient were awake, moving and sensing. The remaining liquid has antiseptic properties, preventing infection from areas where it is applied.   As a result, many more people who come to the temple for healing are not only surviving but thriving. Naturally Maidel and Iorwen credit Khoronus with the inspiration which led them to discover the powerful healing properties which can be obtained from a substance which is causing so much misery in the city.

Equine surgery

The anaesthetic made a big difference to humanoid treatment, but horse physician Giordano Ruffo has started using it for his equine patients to even greater effect. There are many horses in Akorros - pulling carts and wagons, for riding - and many suffer accidents in the course of their work. Giordano is renowned across the city as a horse doctor, and his treatments have become even more successful since. Horses are not renowned for their stoicism, and thrash about when being treated, endangering not only themselves but the doctor as well. So Giordano has begun anaesthetising the horses and then hoisting the horses in slings, using the antiseptic lotion to clean the wounds and treat them. in the few months since starting this, his success rate has soared from around 50% to around 90% of cases, extending the useful lifespan of many more horses and in quite a few cases saving the livelihood of businesses who couldn't afford to replace their horse.
